His numerous works (including four symphonies) for concert band and orchestra are performed throughout the world. James Barnes is a performer on the tuba, and in recent years he has turned his attention to compositions and arrangments for the tuba and members of the tuba family. Included among these works are a Tuba Concerto, op. 96 (available with accompaniment for orchestra, concert band or piano), the Duo Concertante for solo trumpet and euphonium, op. 74 (available with accompaniment for concert band or piano), and arrangements for tuba-euphonium ensemble including Yorkshire Ballad (professionally recorded by the ensemble Symphonia), and two settings of the same piece (one for small wind band and one for small orchestra) as a solo vehicle for the tuba virtuoso Patrick Sheridan.
