PLANET EARTH
The planet Earth is 4,600 million years old. It is difficult for us to think about such an enormous length of
time because it has little meaning for us. We can, however, simplify the idea to make it more
understandable. We can compare the planet Earth to a person of forty six years of age.
Nothing is known about the first seven years of this person’s life. Very little information exists about the
middle period either. It was only at the age of forty - two that the Earth began to flower.
Dinosaurs and great reptiles did not appear until one year ago, when the planet was forty - five. Mammals
only arrived eight months ago. In the middle of last week, man - like apes became ape - like men and began
to communicate with each other. Last weekend, the Ice Age covered the Earth.
Modern man has only been around for four hours. During the last hour man discovered agriculture. The
Industrial Revolution and the rise of large cities began just six seconds ago.
During that short time, modern man has made a rubbish tip of the Earth. In one minute, he has increased
his numbers to terrible proportions, and has caused the death of hundreds of species of animals. He has
robbed and destroyed the planet in his search for fuels. Now he stands, like a violent, spoilt child, delighted
at the speed of his rise to power, on the edge of the final mass destruction and of killing all the life which
exists in the solar system.

3. The author is mainly interested in
A. the time when man first evolved from apes.
B. what has happened since the Industrial Revolution.
C. the effects of farming.
D. the period before the last Ice Age.

A. man will destroy everything on Earth.
B. man will use up all the fuels.
C. there will be a population explosion.
D. more species of animal may die out.
5. The author’s general view of man seems to be that
A. he has no right to be so destructive.

FATHER AND SON START GOLD RUSH

1. _______ After ten years of digging in the Welsh hills, they are convinced that they are just metres away

tunnel and a 10-metre shaft.
4. _______ Now they are running short of money. Having spent their savings chasing their dream, they will
have to convince a backer to put $ 50,000 into the project to lower the mine just a few more metres to
where the gold lies. Chris madden says, “At the moment, this looks doubtful although we’ve got quite a
few people we can contact.”
5. ________ As word spread through the valleys last week about the dig, the magic attraction of gold started
turning the heads of the inhabitants as well as the gold diggers. Dolgellau relies on tourists, and residents
are cautiously hopeful. “It would encourage more people to come here if they are right, “said Peter

03 will really enjoy reading it as the book is one
04 I have been intending to buy it ever since it
05 was published about two and a half years
06 ago. On Thursday, instead of buying for me a
07 present, my sister took me out for a meal in
08 a restaurant which had been highly
09 recommended her in a local newspaper. The
10 restaurant which had been open for only two
11 months, was at about 25 kilometers away
12 and we went there in my sister’s car. The
13 meal was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed
14 ourselves the evening. Unfortunately, after we
15 left the restaurant, we had a problem with the
16 car as that it would not start. We could not find
17 out what the trouble was and decided to leave it
18 behind in the car park until the following day.
19 We asked of a waiter to call a taxi but had to
20 wait over an hour for it to arrive, and so we did
21 not get back our home until very late. I
22 certainly did not feel at all like getting up and
23 going to the work next morning.
