Some people fear that technology is gradually taking over control of our lives, while others
think that it has led to many positive developments in all aspects of their lives.
Exercise 1
What type of essay you are asked to write?
Do you need to give reasons and examples to support your answer? Should the examples
be personal or abstract?
Can you give results, causes and effects and express reservation to support your answer?
How many parts are there in the above question?
How many ideas do you need to write about?
1. It could be written in Discussion Essay form. First, outlining the issue in order to give
readers boundaries about what is going to be discussed. Second, providing or listing the
arguments of both sides. Third, summing up all the arguments to state our preference.
2. I give my personal examples of using technology, specifically internet using in my daily
life.
3. Yes, I can.
4. Three parts.
5. Two ideas. The advantages and the disadvantages.
Exercise 2
Look at the following introductions to an answer to the question. Decide which two of them are
suitable and why.
Technology is now used in all areas of our lives: the home, at work and in education.
Most people use computer every day.
Some people fear that technology is gradually taking control of our lives. Others think
that it has led to many positive developments in all areas of their lives.
In some people’s eyes, the influence of technology over our lives is beneficial and yet to
others it is harmful. The arguments on both sides are valid but there is, in my opinion,
little to be anxious about regarding the use of technology.
As with any development, people worry about how new technology will affect their lives.
There are, however, many people who see the benefits of technology and so are in favor
of its use.

Exercise 3
The paragraph below continues the argument from one of the introductory paragraphs in exercise
2. Read the paragraph and match it to the introduction.
To some people technology appears to be controlling people’s lives. However I
mobile phone etc has brought enormous improvement to many people’s lives
worldwide. Take, for example, the impact technology has had on communication.
Computers have revolutionized the way items such as letters, messages and
packages are sent. Quick messages, for instance, can be transmitted between
New York and Beijing in seconds either by text message or by email. Moreover,
very large files such as reports and even whole books that were once sent by
post can now be transmitted in order to save time and money. As a result, the
economy benefits.

I can’t deny that technology has made my life a lot simpler and easier.
Here are three things I feel the most. They are communication,
banking/financial/payment transfer and entertainment. Firstly, technology
has successfully shortened the time of delivering our thoughts. By using
instant messaging I can communicate with many people wherever they are
efficiently. Furthermore, it’s cheap. Secondly, we don’t have to go to a
bank to withdraw, transfer money or pay the bills. We may use ATM to
withdraw and use online banking service/application to transfer/receive
money or to do bill payment from any location using internet. It’s
accessible 24/7, unlike the banks that open only on weekdays. Thirdly, I
thank online video sharing platforms and online gaming. They offer
various entertainments. Normal life can be stressful, and we need to relax.
Being entertained can reduce stress and make life's issues easier to face.
Reducing stress with a good distraction can drain negative emotions. This
allows us to face life with a clear mind and better able to solve problems.
Advantages and disadvantages of technology are like two sides of the same
coin. Being online means we let others know some of our information.
Technology creates a new series of data security issues to manage. People
have fast access to our internet activity because of the effectiveness of
search engine technologies. Consequently, many people have suffered data
theft issues in recent years because of data leak incidents. What is more,
human workers have less value. Machines automate processes and can do
the work of ten people with a single computer; companies may not need to
employ so many people to do a job.
I sum up this writing by saying this “problem is not the gun, but the man
behind it”. So does technology.
Exercise 7
Read the following paragraph on homelessness, and decide whether the words that will go in
each gap will introduce an example, result, contrast, reason, purpose or concession.
Many major cities like New York, London or Paris face problems relating to
homelessness, mainly 1 there is a shortage of housing and high rents for
property. 2 there are many empty properties in these cities, which could be
used to alleviate the situation. Governments should 3 encourage property
owners to rent out the properties to those without homes. 4 , incentives can
be given to owners by giving tax relief or subsidies 5 help release empty
properties on to the market. Measure like this would 6 help to alleviate the
situation. 7 this is not a complete answer to the problem, it ought to be
considered.
1. because
2. yet
3. therefore
4. for example
5. in order to
6. then
7. although
Exercise 8
