I. LESSON TITLE Reading and Measuring Temperature with Problem Solving
II. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING Reads and measures temperature using thermometer (alcohol and/or
COMPETENCIES (MELCs) digital) in degree Celsius. M5ME-IVf-85
Solves routine and non-routine problems involving temperature in real-life
situations. M5ME-IVf-87
III. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT Reading and measuring temperature using thermometer in degree Celsius
and solving routine and non-routine problems involving temperature in
real-life situations.
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: Day 1)

Temperature plays a crucial role in medical care (both humans and animals), food, beverages, and
agriculture. Our overall health is often reliant upon temperature in many ways as well.
Temperature is the hotness or coldness of a body/object. It can be expressed in “degrees Celsius”.
In this lesson, you will be able to read and measure temperature using a thermometer, and solve routine and
non-routine problems involving temperature.
A Thermometer is an instrument for measuring temperature, a unit for measuring temperature is the degree
Celsius (oC).

ethanol

ol

A thermometer consists of a glass attached to a glass tube with a number a scale. The liquid in the bulb rises or
drops when temperature changes.

• The ethanol rises when hot and goes

down when it is cool.
• The normal body temperature is 37◦C.
• The boiling point of water is 100◦C
and the freezing point is 0◦C.
• Each space in the number scale
represents 1◦C. The numbers below 0
are written with a minus (-) sign.
• To read a thermometer, find the level
of the liquid or the ethanol.
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Example 1: What is the temperature being shown?

Answer: 48°C

Example 2:
Emmanuel is not feeling well after their trip to Laguna, so his mother used a thermometer to measure his
temperature. The normal body temperature of a person is 37◦C. Observing the thermometer below, how many
degrees is Emmanuel’s temperature higher than the normal body temperature?

Solutions:
It shows from the temperature that Emmanuel has a
body temperature of 38.4◦C. Since the normal body
temperature is 37◦C, We have

38.4 - 37 = 1.4
Therefore, Emmanuel’s body temperature is 1.4 oC
higher than normal.

D. Development (Time Frame: Day 2)

Learning Task No.1

Read the temperature shown in each thermometer.

1.________ 2._________ 3.________ 4.________ 5.________

Learning Task No.2

Choose what you think is the temperature of the following.

1. Hot water a. -10◦C b. 30◦C c. 70◦C

2. A person with fever a. 30◦C b. 35◦C c. 40◦C
3. Ice cold tea a. 10◦C b. 20◦C c. 40◦C
4. Bread in oven a. 40◦C b. 100◦C c. 250◦C
5. Ice candy a. 100◦C b. 35◦C c. 0◦C
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
E. Engagement (Time Frame: Day 3)
Learning Task No. 3
Use the facts in the table below to solve the problem.
Element Melting point
How much hotter is the temperature needed to melt gold
Gold 1064.43◦C than the temperature needed to melt lead?
Lead 327.5◦C

1. What is asked in the problem?

2. What facts are given?
3. What operation will be used?
4. How is the solution done?
5. What is the answer?
A. Assimilation (Time Frame: Day 4)
Learning Task No.4
A. Tell if each statement is true or false.
1. Bea has a fever. Her temperature is 35◦C.
2. The water is boiling. Its temperature is 100◦C.
3. People feel comfortable when the temperature is 48◦C.
B. Solve the following problems:
1. The temperature at Gatid, Santa Cruz, Laguna at 1:00PM was 32◦C. Between 1:00PM and 5:00PM, the
temperature dropped 3.2◦C. What is the temperature at 5:00PM?
2. How many degrees is 26◦C lower than 48◦C? Which of the two is the colder temperature?
3. A freezer is set at 0◦C. Corina reset it to 8.5◦C. Did the temperature in the freezer rise or drop? By how
many degree?
V. ASSESSMENT (Time Frame: Day 5)
A. Shade the thermometer based on the indicated temperature:

1. 20°C 1. 97°C 3. 15°C

Answer the following problems.
1. If the temperature at 11:00 in the morning is 28.5◦C and became 32.7◦C, what was the average temperature?
2. Lino’s temperature this morning was 38.2◦C. after 2 hours his temperature was 39.5◦C. Did he get better or worse?
How many degrees did his temperature rise?
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
VI. REFLECTION (Time Frame: Day 5)
• Communicate your personal assessment as indicated in the Learner’s Assessment Card.
Personal Assessment on Learner’s Level of Performance
