Use Appropriate Message and Visual Design Principles

This submission addresses the challenge of using appropriate message and visual design principles. The artifact submitted is a link to a final e-learning submission and feedback from an initial submission. Visual design principles like proximity, repetition, alignment, and contrast were incorporated. Experience working with an supplier on e-learning helped learn best practices for visual design and message portrayal that have been applied in various deliverables and presentations. Reflection indicates the importance of pre-planning visual elements and critical messages in a design document to effectively transmit information.

Challenge: Use appropriate message and visual design principles
Artifact: Articulate link for e-learning in EDCI 569

Criteria for successful completion of this challenge: Evidence of using appropriate visual
design (proximity, repetition, alignment, contrast) and message principles (content and
delivery) in instructional materials. Other considerations include ADA compliance,
readability, color choices, font choices, space, etc. Reflection must address: Specific
examples of message and visual design principles in your evidence and how these specific
examples work well in the design.

Example: “Before and After” of a project based on feedback regarding message and visual
design choices/suggestions, eLearning projects, job aids or other training materials,
Certification of Quality Matters certificate, Web-Enhanced Lesson (EDCI 568), Individual
Game Document (EDCI 556), Innovative Pedagogies Digital Job Aid (EDCI 568), Artifacts
from Practicum (EDCI 573), Digital story or digital job aid (EDCI 566, EDCI 568), Final Project
(EDCI 569 if taken in Spring 2021 or later), other artifacts (design, performance, workplace,
educational, other) demonstrating use of visual design or message principles.

For the challenge “Use appropriate message and visual design principles,” I am submitting as
an artifact the link to the final submission of my e-learning alongside a document with the
feedback given for my first submission. This artifact works well because I was able to
incorporate visual design and message principles in its creation.

As IDers, we have an essential task to create and design elements in a certain way that will
ensure effective learning. To guarantee this, we must be aware of visual design elements'
impact and how we structure messages can have on learners. If not done correctly, learners
can get distracted, lose interest or even discredit the training. This e-learning shows my ability
to use multimedia design principles by combining media to become more effective and create
congruence in design throughout the module to ensure consistency. For example, before
starting, I created a visual template, selected the color pallet, determined the fonts and sizes,
and streamlined the content to guarantee it was easier to read. During the course, my peers
gave me positive feedback on this aspect.

Some years ago, I had the opportunity to work alongside a supplier, to create e-learning. During
this time, I had weekly meetings to see the progress of the e-learning and learn more about
how they performed their job. This experience was very important because I learned the best
practices regarding visual design principles and the best way to portray messages in e-learning.
Even though I did not have formal learning on this aspect, I learned throughout the year how to
incorporate these elements in different deliverables and presentations I had to create. I even
did a small course on LinkedIn regarding visual design for e-learnings

The artifacts demonstrate my ability to use appropriate message and visual design principles by
demonstrating their application in the creation of e-learning. From this experience, I learned
that before starting a project, it is crucial to create a design document that describes the exact
guidelines of the visual elements that will be used. Also, I learned that to deliver critical
messages, you must select them ahead of time and describe in detail how they should be
displayed. To further develop this competency, I will be more thoughtful and create a design
document for my presentations. I believe that thinking about each slide, its content, and visual
elements before going to a presentation tool will impact how the information is transmitted.
