Lecture1 Shipyard Engineering

This document provides an overview of shipyard engineering. It discusses the objectives of shipyard engineering courses which are to learn about shipyard functions and organization, metal processes used in shipyards, and launching and docking facilities. It then provides details on the classification, necessary facilities, processes, and cost breakdown of shipyards. The key facilities discussed include working shops, docking and launching infrastructure, and material handling equipment.

Shipyards
◆ What is meant by a
shipyard?
SHIPYARDS
◆ Shipyards are industrial organizations
◆ They are usually located in suitable water
area such as harbor basin, bay, or river
◆ They are used for building new ships and/or
repair of ships
◆ Shipbuilding yards have the capability to
apply ship conversion and construct offshore
platform structures
How can shipyards be classified?
Shipyards can be classified,
according to their main function,
into:
Shipbuilding
Yard

Ship Repair
Yard

Shipbuilding &
Repair Yard
SHIPYARD FUNCTIONS

1. Shipbuilding yards mainly build

new ships, offshore structures, etc.
2. Ship repair yards are involved
mainly in repair work of ship
3. Shipbuilding and repair yards are
intended to do both jobs
(construction and repair)
Also, shipbuilding yards may be
categorized conditionally
according to:
◆ Material used in building the hull (steel,
GRP, Aluminum, Wood, etc.)
◆ Size of ship (large size ships, medium size
ships, and small vessels or boats)
In addition, shipbuilding yards
can be divided, according to the
range of cooperation with other
shipyards into:
◆ Shipbuilding yards: in which the hull is
constructed on building birth and the outfitting,
produced elsewhere, installed.
◆ Assembly yards: in which fully processed hull
blocks obtained from other sources are
assembled on a suitable building birth and the
out fitting are installed.
The ship repair yards
operations include:
◆ Periodical maintenance
◆ Overhauls

◆ Ship
conversion
◆ Damage repair
ship repair yards can be
classified, according to
dry-docking facility, into:
◆ Fullservice repair yards that have a dry
docking facility, and
◆ Topside repair yards that have no dry-
docking facility
What are the necessary
facilities for shipyards?

◆ Working shops facilities

◆ Docking and launching facilities

◆ Material handling facilities

◆ Human resources
Working Shops facilities
include:
◆ Prefabrication shops: such as shot blasting,
straightening, priming and marking shops
◆ Fabrication shops: such as cutting, forming
and pipe fabrication shops
◆ Subassembly and assembly shops that
contain welding shop
◆ Auxiliary shops: include electrical, coating,
HVAC, etc.
Docking and launching
facilities
◆ Slipways or shipways
◆ Marine railways

◆ Floating docks

◆ Graving docks

◆ Shiplifts or syncrolifts
