March 1918 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (Germany and Russia). Russia
steps out of World War I. Russia ends its participation in the First World War. Bolshevik Russia loses one- third of the old empire’s population, one-third of its railway network, half its industry, three-quarters of its supplies of iron ore, nine-tenths of its coal resources and much of its food supplies.
March 1918 The Bolshevik Party changes its name to Communist

June 1918 Civil War begins in Russia
1919 Formation of Comintern. The Comintern (or Third
International) is formed in Moscow, with the aim of spreading revolution all over the world.
1922 End of Civil War. Stalin is appointed General
Secretary. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic was formed
1924 Death of Lenin, Stalin succeeded him. Lenin dies,
leading to a power struggle within the party. Stalin emerges as Party leader. His rival Leon Trotsky is dismissed, then exiled and finally murdered in 1940.
