Environmental Science Introduction To Environmental Science PPTX

This document provides an introduction to environmental science. It defines environmental science as the interdisciplinary study of the natural world and environmental problems. It discusses the scope of environmental science, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. It also defines environmental studies and environmental engineering. The document then discusses the environmental history of the Philippines, noting issues like pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and vulnerability to disasters. It explains the differences between environmental conservation, which focuses on sustainable use of resources, and environmental preservation, which aims to maintain untouched natural areas. Finally, it provides some examples of ways individuals can help the environment.

“Environment”
Lesson 1: What is
environmental Science
Definition and Scope
Lesson Objectives:
• Identify the important scope of environmental science.
• Describe the massive change of environment in the
Philippines.
• Demonstrate how the Philippines government care for the
environment.

What is the Article all about?
Read and analyze the article below. Make at least 5 sentences that
discusses the importance of the article you’ve read. How does the
article relate to our subject matter?

Think this Over!

For you, what would be the primary reason why people always
include trees in describing environment?
Environmental Science
• Derived from the word “Environ”=“surrounding”
• scientific study of the natural world
• . Major topics include
• food, energy, human population, biodiversity and global change

• It is an interdisciplinary academic field integrates physical, biological

and information science to the study of the environment, and the
solution of environmental problems.
Environmental Studies

• Incorporate more of the social sciences for understanding human

relationships, perceptions and policies towards the environment.
• Environmental engineering focuses on design and technology for
improving environmental quality in every aspect.
Environmental Scientist
• Study subjects like the understanding of earth process, evaluating
alternative energy system, pollution control and mitigation, natural
resources management and the effects of global climate change.

• Bring a system approach to the analysis of environmental problems.

Scope of
Environmental Science
Our Environment consist of four segments
1. Atmosphere
The Atmosphere implies the protective blanket of gases,
surrounding the earth:
1. It sustains life on earth
2. It saves it from the hostile environment of outer space
3. It absorbs most of the cosmic rays from the outer space and a major
portion of the electromagnetic radiation from the sun.
The atmosphere is composed of nitrogen and oxygen. Besides,
argon, carbon dioxide, and trace gases.
1. Atmosphere
2. Hydrosphere
The Hydrosphere comprises all types of water resources
oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, streams, reservoir, polar icecaps,
glaciers, and ground water.

1. Nature 97% of the earth’s water supply is in the oceans,

2. About 2% of the water resources is locked in the polar icecaps and
glaciers.
3. Only about 1% is available as fresh surface water-rivers, lakes
streams, and ground water fit to be used for human consumption
and other uses.
2. Hydrosphere
3. Lithosphere
Lithosphere is the outer mantle of the solid earth. It consists of
minerals occurring in the earth’s crusts and the soil e.g. minerals,
organic matter, air and water.
3. Lithosphere
4. Biosphere
Biosphere indicates the realm of living organisms and their
interactions with environment, via atmosphere, hydrosphere and
lithosphere.
4. Biosphere
Element of Environment
Environment is constituted by the interacting
systems of physical, biological and cultural elements
inter-related in various ways, individually as well as
collectively. These elements may be explained as
under:
1. Physical elements
Physical elements are as
space, landforms, water bodies,
climate soils, rocks and
minerals. They determine the
variable character of the
human habitat, its
opportunities as well as
limitations.
2. Biological Elements
Biological elements
such as plants, animals,
microorganisms and men
constitute the biosphere.
3. Cultural elements

Cultural elements such as

economic, social and political
elements are essentially manmade
features.
Environmental History of the
Philippines
Environmental History of the Philippines
• One of the fastest growing counties in Asia
• Ineffective management seriously degrades the counties
biodiversity resources
• Water and air pollution level exceeds
• Greenhouse gases emission are increasingly
• Ranked one of the worlds most vulnerable to the impact of
environmental disasters.
Environmental History of the Philippines-Projects
• Buy-in to the U.S. Forest Service Participating Agency Program
Agreement (PAPA) for Sustainable Forest Management
• Municipal Waste Recycling Program (MWRP)
• Partnership for Biodiversity Conservation III (PBC)
• Protect Wildlife
• Toxic Site Identification Program
• U.S. Peace Corps Small Project Assistance
Environmental Conservation
and Preservation
Conservation and Preservation
• Those who are concerned with protecting the environment often use the
words conservation and preservation. These two terms are often
confused and are used to mean the same thing, although differences
exist
Conservation
• is the sustainable use and management of natural resources including
wildlife, water, air, and earth deposits
• Natural resources may be renewable or non-renewable.
• The conservation of renewable resources like trees involves ensuring that
they are not consumed faster than they can be replaced
• The conservation of non-renewable resources like fossil fuels involves
ensuring that sufficient quantities are maintained for future generations to
utilize
Conservation cont.…
• usually focuses on the needs and interests of human beings, for example the
biological, economic, cultural and recreational values such resources have.
• Conservationists accept that development is necessary for a better future,
but only when the changes take place in ways that are not wasteful
Preservation
• attempts to maintain in their present condition areas of the Earth that
are so far untouched by humans.
• . This is due to the concern that mankind is encroaching onto the
environment at such a rate that many untamed
• Stronger advocates of preservation however, adopt a less human-
centered approach to environmental protection, placing a value on
nature that does not relate to the needs and interests of human beings
Preservation cont.….
• Deep green ecology argues that ecosystems and individual species
should be preserved whatever the cost, regardless of their usefulness to
humans, and even if their continued existence would prove harmful to
us.

• This follows from the belief that every living thing has a right to exist
and should be preserved.
Environmental conservation
1. The environment is vital to our well-being and every element
should be protected
2. Conserve by using less energy and embracing alternative
energy sources
3. Help to replenish what is being taken away by giving back to
the Earth
4. Practice habits that are part of conservational efforts

Renkish Environmental
Statement
A true environmentalist by heart ❤. Founded
Conserve Energy Future with the sole motto of providing
helpful information related to our rapidly depleting
environment. Unless you strongly believe in Elon Musk
‘s idea of making Mars as another habitable planet, do
remember that there really is no 'Planet B' in this whole
universe.

What to Do?

Activity 1: “Before, During and After”

Direction. Choose one daily routine you did in
your house which may relate to conservation and
preservation of the environment. Using the title
Before, During and After; convert your daily
routine in something beneficial to the
environment. Take a picture and provide an
explanation below the image.
