Pacing Factor

This document summarizes a forest surveying activity where the student determined their individual pace factor. [1] The student measured a 90m course over 5 trials to determine their average number of paces. [2] They then calculated their pace factor by dividing the length of the course by the average number of paces. [3] The student concluded that knowing their individual pace factor allows them to estimate distances in the field without instruments and that pacing is useful but can be inaccurate if not walking in a straight line.

SUBJECT: FOREST SURVEYING & ENGINEERING COURSE & YEAR: BSFo2
ACTIVITY 1: PACING

I. INTRODUCTION

Pacing is a reasonably easy and quick method of measuring distance in the field. This
fieldwork is about determining the pace factor of an individual.
The pace factor is determined by getting the product of the sum of steps by the known
value of the line or course. From getting the pace factor by pace or one step, or by the
stride or double step, you can use your own pace factor to measure a line or a course.
Knowing pace factor is very useful in the field of engineering specifically in Forest
Surveying in the field of surveying when you don't have an instrument in measuring a
long distance of course or a line. Different people have their own pace factor so every
individual differ on other pace factor.
To know the distance of the course you want to measure, it is by getting the product of
your pace factor to the sum of the steps or the pacing of the course or line. This is
significant for all the engineering for their field works.

II. PROCEDURE

1. First, our instructor Sir. Abdulgani B. Lintang, RF measures and designates a 90m
course on a level ground.

2. Then, the ends of the assigned course he marked it using metal bar of a soccer goal or
stone to designate the points of A and B.

3. After that, we started counting our step to achieve 5 trials

4. Finally, the result of my processing can be seen in the table.

Course Line Trials Measured No. of Mean Pace Factor

Line Paces
A-B 1 90 125 113.1 0.79
B-A 2 114
A-B 3 114.5
B-A 4 105
A-B 5 107

III. MATERIALS

Synthetic Tape Measure

Ballpen

Notebook

Calculator
IV. OBJECTIVES

To obtain individual pace factor.

To determine an unknown distance by individual pacing.

I believe this method will help me for some requirement.

V. COMPUTATION

A. Mean No. of Paces

Σ (No. of Paces)
(No. of Trials)

125+114+114.5+105+107 = 113.1
5

B. Pace Factor

PF (Length of Course Line)

(Measured of Paces)

90m = 0.79 m/p

113.1m/p

VI. CONCLUSION

In this fieldwork, I learned the importance of knowing my own pace factor. It is very
useful whenever I needed to measure the distance of a course without using any
instruments. I observed one source of error using pacing is not walking in a straight path.
Sometimes walking without a mark makes it difficult to walk directly. I can now estimate
a distance on a field using only my pace factor.
