Akaryotic An organism with no cytoplasm or nucleus and its genetic info can be

in the form of RNA/DNA

Prokaryotic These are organisms that have a cytoplasm but no nucleus. DNA is
stored in the cytoplasm and is floating freely. No membrane bound
organelles.

Eukaryotic These are true cells as they contain a cytoplasm as well as a

nucleus. The genetic information is stored in the nucleus.

Transport

Active The movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to an

area of high concentration, against the concentration gradient.
Requires energy in the form of ATP as this is an active process.

Diffusion The movements of molecules from an area of high concentration to

an area of low concentration. A passive process and therefore no
ATP required.

OSMOSIS The movement of water molecules from an area of high water

potential to an area of low water potential, across a semi-permeable
membrane.

Tonicity Refers to the amount of dissolved substances in a solution.

HYPOTONIC In a hypotonic solution there are less dissolved substances in a

solution.

HYPERTONIC In a hypertonic solution there are more dissolved substances in a

solution.

Isotonic Same amount of dissolved substances in a solution

Permeability

Impermeable This is a structure that doesn’t allow any substances to pass through
it.

Semi-permeable This is a structure which will allow certain substances to pass through
it.

Permeable This is a structure that will allow any substances small enough to
pass through it.
