For the facilitator:

Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks
included in the module.

contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

Let’s Learn

This lesson is designed to help learners gain an intuitive feel for the size of
units for measuring length, weight/mass, volume, time, angle, temperature, and rate.
The result of measuring are merely approximation since measurement are not
always exact.
After going through this module, you are expected to approximate the measures
of quantities particularly length, weight/mass, volume time, angle and temperature and
rate.

1 Measurement

One of the important and fascinating aspects of mathematics in our everyday life is
measurement. When we buy food, clothing, house, medicine and many others, measurement
is involved.

Measurement is the determination of the size of a thing or a comparison between


some aspect of a thing and a standard unit of measure.

We tend to ask about the number, the size, and the amount of things we need. And
these have to be measured.

1 Miriam wants to change the curtains in their bedroom. What measuring instrument
must she use to find the length of cloth she needs for her curtain?

out if her mother has a fever?
3 Linda wants to measure the length of her notebook. What instrument does she
need?
4 Father bought 2 kilos of chicken. When she arrived home from the market, she
weighed the chicken again, only to find out that she was cheated. What

8 Sometimes spoons are of different sizes, so we don’t use them in measuring liquid

use to know how far she already travelled?

Choosing Appropriate Units of Measure


In our everyday living, we come across the quantities such as length, weight, time,
distance, mass, area, volume, and so on. In a mathematics, we are more interested in the
units of measurements, which are used to describe the size of each of these quantities.
To measure small objects like thickness of a book, a safety pin or sim card, use
millimeter. To measure bigger objects like length of a cell phone, or a math text book, use
centimeter. To measure longer lengths like length of a flagpole or a piece of land, use meter.
To measure distances between two places like the distance between Taguig City to Pasig
City, use kilometers.
The table on the next page will show you the appropriate units to be used for its
corresponding category of measurement.

When we describe different physical quantities, it is best to use appropriate units of
measure. Using other units of measure to describe a quantity gives either very small or very
large number value. It becomes difficult to estimate the measure of the quantity, if
inappropriate units are used.

Illustrative Example 1:
