Introductory Message
Welcome to Science 5!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Bacolod City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents, and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring lifelong learning skills, knowledge, and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science 5 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and the learner. This will be made available
to the learners with references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Science 5 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even
if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read
and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Constellations

I. Learning Competency with Code

Identify star patterns that can be seen at a particular time of the year
(S5FE-IVi-j-9).

II. Background Information for Learners

Have you observed a clear night

sky? Have you seen hundreds of stars
twinkling?
Hundreds of stars can be seen
clearly in the rural areas due to the absence of
city lights and smog. You can usually see this in
rural areas, away from city lights and smog.
Therefore, you can view the stars at night Figure 1: Viewing stars on a
so plainly. night sky
Almost all of the stars you can see are part of the large system of
stars called the Milky Way Galaxy. The sun, earth, and other planets are part
of it.
Stars are spinning balls of hot, luminous gases. There are more
stars than any other object in the universe. They are composed mainly of
hydrogen and helium. From afar, they look like sparkling jewels. In ancient
times, people noticed how stars seem to form patterns in the sky. Do you know
that they associated it with familiar objects like animals and even human
characters? This learning activity will help you identify star patterns that can be
seen at a particular time of the year.

III. Activity Proper

Directions: Gather all the materials and perform this activity. Seek help from
an adult at home. Read and follow the procedure carefully. Write your answers
in your science notebook.

Activity 1. Own-Made Constellation

Materials
constellation template
tissue cardboard tubes
paste/ glue
scissors
push pin/ safety pin
flashlight

Note: Be careful in handling the materials..

4
Procedure

1. Refer to the constellation template found on page 9.

2. Choose and cut the constellation you like to have. Take note of the broken
lines and use them as your guide when cutting.
3. Poke holes in them using the pushpin or safety pin on the places that stars
are indicated.
4. Get your tissue cardboard tubes.
5. Paste or glue the constellation you chose on one top of the cardboard tube.
6. Go to a dark room and turn on your flashlight.
7. To view the constellation, place the light inside the tube pointing up to the
ceiling, there you could see your own-made constellation.
8. You may have and try many constellations as much as you want.

Guide Questions

1. Based on this activity, what were the constellations you made?

______________________________________________________________

2. Observe your own-made Ursa Minor and Ursa Major, what star pattern is
present in them?
A. Ursa Major ______________________________
B. Ursa Minor ______________________________

3. If you are going to look at your own-made constellation, how are you going
to describe a constellation?
______________________________________________________________

4. Try to go out at night and list down the constellations and star patterns that
you can see in the night sky too. Which of the constellations in the template can
you see in the sky?
______________________________________________________________

Constellations are groups of stars that appear to form different patterns

in the sky. The ancient people first observed these groups of stars as outlines
of animals, mythological heroes, gods, and other objects. For example, in the
Northern Hemisphere, they have observed a group of stars that they thought
look like a dragon, and so they named this group of stars Draco. In the Southern
Hemisphere, they noticed a group of stars that seemingly form a cross and so
they called it as Southern Cross.

Table 1: Some of the known constellations
Constellation Constellation Description
Name Pattern
Ursa Major Resembles a big bear and is the third-
largest constellation in the night sky. It
includes the Big Dipper, which is
composed of the seven stars, Alkaid, Alcor,
and Mizar (appear as one), Alioth, Megrez,
Phecda, Merak, and Dhube. Ursa major
can be seen in the sky all year long.

Ursa Minor Also called the little bear, contains a group

of stars known as the Little Dipper. The
handle of the dipper serves as the little
bear’s tail and the dipper’s cup is the bear’s
thigh. The most famous star in it is Polaris.
It is also called the North Star since its
position always points to the earth’s north
pole. Ursa minor is visible in the night sky
all year.

Cassiopeia Consists of five stars that seem to form the

letter W. It represents the queen
Cassiopeia of the mythical kingdom of
Ethiopia. Cassiopeia is visible in the night
sky all year long.

Orion It is one of the most recognizable

(The Hunter) constellations in the night sky and is visible
throughout the world. Three of its stars
form its belt. Orion’s belt is an asterism. An
asterism is a prominent pattern or group of
stars, typically having a popular name but
smaller than a constellation. On Orion’s
right shoulder is a red supergiant star
called Betelgeuse. A bluish-white star
called Rigel is found on Orion’s left knee.
In winter, we see the constellation Orion in
the south at night and daytime during the
summer.

Among the 88 star patterns are the twelve constellations of the Zodiac.
Although it is the Earth that orbits around the sun, from the Earth’s perspective,
it is the sun that moves around it in a circular path. These constellations of the
Zodiac lie in the “path” of the sun. Because of their location and the position
and movement of the other heavenly bodies, they are thought to have an
influence on human behavior and events. This study is called astrology. The
zodiac contains 12 constellations. Each constellation is represented by a sign
or symbol.

Usefulness of Constellations
Since ancient times, constellations are always helpful to people. They
used the appearance of certain stars to forecast the weather. When stars are
visible, they expect fair weather. But, when stars are hidden behind the clouds,
the next day may be cloudy or rainy. Constellations are helpful to navigators
too. When they are lost at sea, they refer to Polaris, which is in Ursa Minor.
They use Polaris as the guiding star. Polaris is a fixed star. It is located in the
north. By using Polaris, it is easy to find south, east, and west directions.

Activity 2: Constellation Matching

Directions: Match the figures of the constellations to their correct name.

Guide Questions

1. Based on this activity, what were the own-made constellations that you have
done?
Based on this activity, the own-made constellations that I have made
were the Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Orion, and Cassiopeia. (Answers depend on
the learner's number of constellations made).
2. Observe your own-made Ursa Minor and Ursa Major, what asterism is
present in them?
A. Ursa Major: Big Dipper
B. Ursa Minor: Little Dipper
3. If you are going to look at your own-made constellation, how are you going
to describe a constellation?
A constellation is a group of stars that form patterns in the sky.
4. Among the constellations in the template, try to go out at night and make a
list of the constellations and asterisms that you can see.
(Answers depend on one’s location)

Reflection
What is the significance of studying constellations in our life?

Constellations are part of our lives. In the past, the appearance of the
stars is used to forecast the weather. It also helps navigators when they are
ost. They refer to Polaris star, the guiding star, which can be seen at Ursa Minor
