Comparison Analysis

The document summarizes two videos about residential care facilities for the elderly in the Philippines and Australia. For the Philippines, the Haven for the Elderly facility provides free food, shelter and medical care to 253 residents. Staffing ratios are insufficient at 1 house parent for 25 elders. Australia has stronger standards of care through its Aged Care Quality Standards which are assessed by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. The standards focus on elder dignity, care plans, clinical care, daily living supports, service quality, feedback and governance. Overall, the Philippines system struggles more due to less funding and resources compared to Australia's affluent model.

Residential Home care facilities provide long-term personal care who are
unable to care for themselves; a place for people who don't need to be in a hospital
but can't be cared for at home. The facilities provide room, board, housekeeping,
supervision, and personal care assistance. Usually, residents are elderly and frail
whose families can't take care of them.

Caring is an essential value in nursing, especially in geriatric nursing. A nurse's

role in aged care is to provide direct and individualized long-term care for elderly clients.
It is challenging to take care of the elderly since they have more needs and demands.
As such, nurses need to provide their best services to meet such requirements.

In most cases, most nursing home residents will live the rest of their lives in the
facility. It is essential to make it feel like the clients are in the comfort of their homes
through providing the appropriate care that they need.

AGED CARE QUALITY STANDARD (AUSTRALIA) AND HAVEN FOR THE

ELDERLY (PHILIPPINES)

Both videos presented the residential healthcare facility in both countries. Here are
key points from the two videos.

Aging adults need to cope with the changes happening in their lives by seeking
help to meet their needs. One of the options is to stay in a nursing home care facility
that caters to all of their necessities.

In the Philippines, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)

is responsible for establishing residential home care facilities. Since the population of
older adults is increasing, the funds for senior care needs to be improved. According
to the Philippine Statistics Authority, older adults living in the country grow every year.
And by the year 2030, they are expecting the number of older adults to increase up to
14 million.

Providing geriatrics healthcare will be challenging in a third-world country due

to a lack of human resources. From the documentary, the ratio of a house parent to
elderly is 1:25, and the ideal ratio is 1:3 or 1:4 for the health care provider to maximize
their services. Because of the shortage of health care providers, the needs of the
elderly are overlooked.
On the other hand, the Australian government is stepping up its gerontological care
game by creating and following the Aged Care Quality Standards. Providing high-
quality and safe choices for elderly consumers. The Australian government also has
an Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) that protects and enhances
the safety, health, well-being, and quality of life of elderly consumers, ensuring that
the older adults are given the appropriate care they need. The following are the 8
Aged Care Quality Standards:

1. Consumer Dignity and Choice

2. Ongoing assessment and planning with consumers
3. Personal care and clinical care
4. Services and supports for daily living
5. Organization’s service environment
6. Feedback and complaints
7. Human resources
8. Organizational governance

Due to financial instability and lack of workforce, the Philippines is struggling to

meet the needs and demands of gerontological care compared to affluent countries
like Australia. The government can’t provide complete assistance for the elderly such
as institutional care, medical and health care insurance.

In the Philippines, I think what is lacking is not just in the gerontological health care
system. Still, the overall healthcare system lacks resources, financial instability, low-
quality services delivery due to less staffing. Improvement of these lacks increases’
quality care services and is achievable through developing aged care quality
standards as the Australian government did. Developing and implementing this can
be very challenging for a third-world country.
