Quarter 1 – Module 4D (Week 8):
POLYNOMIAL AND POLYNOMIAL EQUATION

Self-Learning Module
Introduction of the Lesson
It has been my pleasure to recognize your effort exerted to complete the three modules. I
know you have had enjoyed accomplishing the task you were expected to learn. You are again
challenge to finish the fourth module. This module is about polynomials and polynomial equations. As
you go over the module, you will also learn theorems that can be applied in solving problems. Enjoy
and have fun.

You are expected to learn

This module is created for you to solve problems involving polynomials and polynomial
equations.

LESSON 10

PROBLEM SOLVING INVOLVING POLYNOMIALS

AND POLYNOMIAL EQUATIONS

You have learned a lot on polynomials and polynomial equations. You will apply what you
have learned in word problem.

Recall the tips in solving word problem.

Here are the tips you need to understand so that you may know how to solve word problem
involving polynomial.

1. Identify - What is the question?

2. Plan - What strategy will I use to solve the problem?
3. Solve - Carry out your plan
4. Verify - Does my answer make sense?

Some word problems you can try and solve.

If one ream of bond paper costs (𝟑𝒙 − 𝟒) pesos, how many reams can you buy for
(𝟔𝒙𝟒 − 𝟏𝟕𝒙𝟑 + 𝟐𝟒𝒙𝟐 − 𝟑𝟒𝒙 + 𝟐𝟒) pesos?

How many reams can you buy for (6𝑥 4 − 17𝑥 3 + 24𝑥 2 − 34𝑥 + 24) pesos?
1. Identify
1 ream cost = (3𝑥 − 4) pesos
2. Plan “How many reams can you buy” implies division. Use Synthetic Division.
6𝑥 4 − 17𝑥 3 + 24𝑥 2 − 34𝑥 + 24 3𝑥 − 4
( )÷( )
3 3
17 34 4
(2𝑥 4 − 𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 8) ÷ (𝑥 − )

4 2 17 8 34 8
3. Solve − −
3 3 3
8 -4 16 -8
3 3
2 -3 4 6 0
Therefore, there are (2𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 6) reams of bond papers.
(2𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 6) ∗ (3𝑥 − 4) = (6𝑥 4 − 17𝑥 3 + 24𝑥 2 − 34𝑥 + 24)
4. Verify
(6𝑥 4 − 17𝑥 3 + 24𝑥 2 − 34𝑥 + 24) ≚ (6𝑥 4 − 17𝑥 3 + 24𝑥 2 − 34𝑥 + 24)

Here are Steps in solving word problem involving polynomial equation.

1. Identify your unknowns.

2. Write your equation.
3. Operate on the numbers.
4. Convert the equation into the standard form. Remember to change signs.
5. Factor the equation. By factoring, you reduce the quadratic equation into two equivalent
linear equations.

standard form. 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 195 = 0
Factor the equation.
(𝑥 + 15)(𝑥 − 13) = 0
Solve for x.
𝑥 + 15 = 0, 𝑥 = −15
5. Factor the
𝑥 − 13 = 0, 𝑥 = 13
equation.
The two consecutive integers are:
𝑥 = 13 and 𝑥 + 2 = 13 + 2 = 15 , 13 and 15
𝑥 = −15 and 𝑥 + 2 = −15 + 2 = −13 , -13 and -15
𝑥(𝑥 + 2) = 195 𝑥(𝑥 + 2) = 195
13(13 + 2) = 195 −15(−15 + 2) = 195
6. Check
13(15) = 195 −15(−13) = 195
195 ≚ 195 195 ≚ 195

Try this

Solve the following problems. Show your solution.

1. If a car covers (15𝑥 2 + 17𝑥 − 2) kilometers in (3𝑥 + 2) hours, what is the average speed in
km/hr?
2. The volume of a rectangular solid is (𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 − 16𝑥 + 16) cubic cm, and its height is (𝑥 + 1)
cm. What is the area of its base?
3. A driver earns (12𝑦 2 + 𝑦 − 35) pesos for working (3𝑦 − 5) hours, how much does he earn per
hour?
4. The side of a square lot is (5𝑥 − 3) meters. How many meters of fencing materials are needed
to enclose the square lot? What is the area of the square lot?
5. The sum of two numbers is 19 and their product is 60. Find the product.
6. The altitude of a triangle is 3 cm less than the base. The area of the triangle is 35 square
centimeters. What are its dimensions?
