The Ohio State Highway Patrol says “failure to yield” is the main cause of at-fault teen crashes in Hancock
and Hardin counties. One crash happened on March 18, 2022 when a 17-year-old driver in a pickup truck
was northbound on Township Road 51, ran a stop sign and was hit by an oncoming driver in a minivan
at County Road 29. Neither driver was injured, but the 17-year-old was cited for a minor misdemeanor
offense.

On May 15, 2022, the driver of a pickup truck headed north on SR-519
failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck while turning left by a semi-
truck that was traveling at about 55 MPH. The driver of the semi was not

survive his injuries. A toxicology test later revealed his blood/alcohol
level was nearly 5 times the legal limit to drive.
Alcohol and speed were factors in a crash on April 16, 2022 where the
driver of a 4-wheeler went off the right side of road around 10:15 p.m.
The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the vehicle
and landed in the road. No charges have been filed because the driver
is now confined to a long-term care facility as a result of the serious
injuries sustained in this crash.

driver was distracted, as she did not stop to avoid the crash on a clear,
dry morning.
A driver was traveling too fast when she crashed into a tree on June

the 19-year-old first went off the right side of the road, returned to the
roadway, crossed the center line, drove off the left side of the roadway
and hit a tree causing the car to catch on fire. The driver was not
wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and she sustained serious
