Quarter 3-Module 4
Solving Problems Involving
Parallelograms, Trapezoids, and Kites
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can continue your
studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions
are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lesson on each SLM. This will tell
you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of the module,
you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for
each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the teacher are also provided to our
facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use
a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. Read the instructions carefully
before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

The properties of a quadrilateral such as parallelogram, trapezoid and
kites are important in solving problems. We need to recall and remember all
properties to solve a particular problem. Let us recall those properties.

Remember Me!

Directions: Shade the circle if the given statement is a property of a

Parallelogram, Trapezoid or Kite.

1. Two consecutive angles are supplementary.
2. Area is half the product of the length
of its diagonal.
3. Perpendicular bisector of at least one
diagonal is the other diagonal.
4. Opposite angles are congruent.
5. Diagonals bisect each other.
6. Diagonals form two congruent triangles.
7. Two consecutive angles are supplementary.
8. The base angles are congruent.
9. The diagonals forms a perpendicular line.

Given: CA= 3x-3, ER= x+13

∠CER = (x+6)0 ∠ARE = (2x+3) 0

Where: CA ER; ∠CER and ∠ARE are supplementary

are congruent.
3x-3 = x+13
CA ER 3x- _____= 13 + _______
So, it means that CA=ER, then _______= 16
3x-3 = x+13 x= ______

In a parallelogram, two consecutive

angles are supplementary. Solving for the value of x.

(x+6)+(2x+3)=180
m∠CER + m∠ARE=180
3x + ___= 180
So, it means 3x=_____-9
(x+6)+(2x+3)= 180 3x=_____
x=_______

Since we already have the values of x, we can find the measure of CA and
ER, the same with CER and ARE.

Let us substitute the value of x to

54
Solving Problems Involving Parallelogram
From the previous activities that we have done, we are now familiarized
with the properties of a parallelogram to solve the problems.

Example 1: Refer to parallelogram BEST to solve for the unknown.

B (2a+8)cm E

(y+9)0

(y+9)0
T (3a-10)cm. S

A. Find the measurement of side BE and TS when BE=(2a+8)cm and

TS= (3a-10)cm.
Let us first solve for a, to find the measure of side BE and TS.

In a parallelogram,
opposite sides are
congruent.

TS BE
3a-10=2a+8
3a-2a=10+8
a=18✔

Substitute the value of a

BE=2a+8 TS= 3a-10
BE= 2(18)+8 TS= 3(18)-10
BE= 36+8 TS= 54-10
BE= 44✔ TS=44✔

56
B. Find the measurement of ∠BTS and ∠EBT when m∠BTS is (y+9)0 and
m∠EBT is (4y+6)0.

In a parallelogram, any
two consecutive angles
are supplementary.

m BTS+m EBT=180
y+9+4y+6=180
5y+15=180
5y=180-15
5y=165
5 5
Substitute the value of y y=33✔
BTS= y+9 EBT=4y+6
BTS= 33+9 EBT=4(33)+6
BTS = 42 ✔0 EBT=132+6
EBT= 1380✔

Example 2
Solving Problems Involving Trapezoid

Remember
this!
➢ The base angles of an isosceles
trapezoid are congruent.
➢ Opposite angles of an isosceles
trapezoid are supplementary.
➢ The diagonals of an isosceles
trapezoid are congruent.

76
Refer to isosceles trapezoid GIFT to answer the following question:
G I

T F

A. Given: GTF= (2x+16)0, IFT= (3x-4)0, solve for GTF and IFT.

m∠GTF m∠IFT GTF= (2x+16)0 IFT=(3x-4)0

(3x-4) =(2x+16)0
0 GTF = 2(20)+16 IFT= 3(20)-4
3x-2x=16+4 GTF= 40+16 IFT= 60-4
x=20✔ GTF = 560✔ IFT = 560✔

B. Given: m∠TGI = (2y+15)0, m∠IFT= 1150, solve for m∠TGI.

m∠TGI + m∠IFT=180 m∠TGI= (2y+15)0 m∠TGI + m∠IFT=1800

2y+15+115 = 180 m∠TGI = 2(25)+15 650 + 1150 = 1800
2y= 180-15-115 m∠TGI = 50+15 1800=1800✔
2y= 50 m∠TGI = 650✔
2 2
y= 25✔

C. Given: IT= 4m-2, FG= 2m+8, solve for IT and FG.

IT FG IT= 4m-2 FG=2m+8

4m-2=2m+8 IT= 4(5)-2 FG=2(5)+8
4m-2m=8+2 IT= 20-2 FG= 10+8
2m=10 IT=18✔ FG=18✔

m=5✔
Example 3

Solving Problems Involving Kites

Let’s apply
this!
The Area of a Kite is half
the product of the lengths
of its diagonals.

87
A. Refer to this figure: Kite HOPE with diagonals HP and EO
H Example no. 1: Solve for the area of kite HOPE
with diagonal HP is 25cm and diagonal EO is
12cm.
E T O Given: HP= 25cm
EO= 12cm
Solution:
Area= ½(HP)(EO)
P A= ½(25cm)(12cm)
A= ½(300cm2)
A=150cm2

Example no 2: Given the area of the kite HOPE is 125m2 and

diagonal HP is 50m, find diagonal EO.
1
Solution: Area= 2(HP)(E0), suppose that EO=x
1
125= (50)(x)
2
125=50x
2
250=50x
50 50
5= x, therefore EO=5m
