Linear Equations

The document is a math worksheet for 10th grade containing 10 questions about pairs of linear equations. The questions cover determining if pairs of equations are consistent or represent coincident lines, solving pairs of equations for variables, finding values that result in infinite or no solutions, forming and graphically solving word problems as pairs of equations, and finding values of variables from information given about a geometric figure.

WORKSHEET

Pair of linear equations in two variables

Question 1.
Is the following pair of linear equations consistent? Justify your answer.
2ax + by = a, 4ax + 2by – 2a = 0; a, b≠ 0

Question 2
Does the following pair of equations represent a pair of coincident lines?
Justify your answer.
x/2 + y + 2/5 = 0, 4x+ 8y + 5/16 = 0.

Question 3.
If x = p, y = q is the solution of the pair of equation x – y = 2 and x + y = 4,
then find the value of p and q.

Question 4.
Solve for x and y

Question 5.
(i) For which values of a and b does the following pair of linear equations
have an infinite number of solutions?
2x + 3y = 7
(a – b)x + (a + b)y = 3a + b – 2
(ii) for which value of k will the following pair of linear equations have no
solution?
3x + y = 1
(2k – 1)x + (k – 1)y = 2k + 1

Question 6.
Form the pair of linear equations in this problem, and find its solution
graphically: 10 students of Class X took part in a Mathematics quiz. If the
number of girls is 4 more than the number of boys, find the number of boys
and girls who took part in the quiz.
Question 7.
A boat covers 25 km upstream and 44 km downstream in 9 hours. Also, it
covers 15 km upstream and 22 km downstream in 5 hours. Find the speed
of the boat in still water and that of the stream.

Question 8) For what values of p and q will the following pair of linear
equations has infinitely many solutions?
4x + 5y = 2;
(2p + 7q)x + (p + 8q)y = 2q-p + 1

Question 9) A two-digit number is obtained by either multiplying the sum of the

digits by 8 and then subtracting 5 or by multiplying the difference of the digits
by 16 and then adding 3. Find the number.

Question 10) Q 6) In Fig. 3.1, ABCDE is a pentagon with BE||CD and

BC||DE. BC is perpendicular to CD. If the perimeter of ABCDE is 21 cm.
Find the value of x and y.
