KMPH

This document contains a summary of key concepts from a biology exam, including: 1) A grazing food chain with three trophic levels is shown, with energy transfer between trophic levels typically around 10%. Food chains rarely exceed five trophic levels due to energy loss at each level. 2) A biogeochemical carbon cycle is depicted, with decomposition and cellular respiration returning carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Combustion of fossil fuels increases atmospheric CO2 and can lead to the greenhouse effect. 3) Types of variation are described, including discontinuous vs continuous traits influenced by single vs multiple genes. Mechanisms of natural selection like directional, stabilizing, and disruptive selection are also outlined.
