As you go through the rest of the activities, all your questions about how to give first aid
will be clarified. Finally, your knowledge, considering its adequacy and relevance will be
assessed at the end of this phase.

Activity #2: FIX ME I’M BROKEN?

Read each statement, try to set yourself in the situation and let us know how you handle
it if this happens to you. Write your answer in the 2nd column.

SITUATIONS IMMEDIATE ACTION

TO BE TAKEN

1. Your teammate in Volleyball slips in the comfort room and

cannot move his right arm anymore.
2. You are playing Basketball with your cousin, and suddenly he
fell down after the wrong twist of his feet.
3. You are in the Basketball Final Game, after the 3rd quarter,
you noticed that you can’t move your legs because of cramps.

4. In Volleyball training, your teammate accidentally crossed her

legs and fell down. As you helped her you noticed that she
cannot move her knees because of the injury.

To enjoy and maintain physical fitness, preventing injury during any physical activity is
fundamental. Accordingly, it is wise to comprehend the causes of the injuries and how to
treat it right. Since appropriate treatment can accelerate the recuperation of any injury.
In this way, let us continue the lesson for you to fully understand the basic first aid.

Congratulations! You’ve done the preliminary activities successfully

on your own. I think you are more than ready for the next stage!

What is It
To unlock difficulties or misconceptions, you are highly encouraged to read the following
readings:
First Aid is an immediate and temporary care given to a person who suddenly gets ill or
injured. It includes self-help and home care if medical assistance is not available or
delayed. It can mean the difference between life and death in extreme cases. However, we
must know the limits of the first aid we can give because improper first aid can actually
do more harm than good in some instances. Anyone who gives first aid is a first aider.
Objectives of First Aid:
● To alleviate suffering
● To prevent added/further injury or danger
4
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
● To prolong life
Common Injuries Encountered by Officials and Athlete

1. Heat exhaustion is a response to heat characterized by fatigue, weakness and

collapse due to inadequate intake of water to compensate for loss of fluids during
sweating.

2. Sprain is caused by stretched or torn fibers in a ligament. Sprains are caused by

trauma such as a fall or blow of the body that knocks a joint out position. Swelling
and bruising are some signs and symptoms

3. Strain is a twist, pull or tear of a muscle or tendon. Symptoms of a strain include

pain, muscle spasm and loss of strength.

4. Knee injuries can result from blows or twists to the knees from improper landing
after a jump or from running too hard without warm up.

5. Fracture is a break in the bone that can occur from either a quick, one time injury
to the bone.

6. Dislocation is when two bones come together to form a joint that becomes
separated. A dislocated joint is an emergency situation that requires medical
treatment.

PREVENTION
Perform warm up exercises before and cool down exercises after the activity. Injuries can
be prevented. Listen to your body. Use proper equipment and correct techniques.
Use common sense to prevent injury in everyday life. Don’t carry heavy objects. Watch
your step. Keep your place safe.

R.I.C.E. METHOD

✔ Rest – the injured part. Use crutches if the leg, foot, or ankle is injured. Support an
injured wrist, arm, or shoulder with a sling.
✔ Ice – an excellent anti-inflammatory and reduces swelling and pain.
✔ Compression – also reduces swelling. Use elastic bandages for at least 2 days.
✔ Elevation – it drains fluids from injured tissues

HOME TREATMENT for SPRAINS and STRAINS

Minor sprains and strains can be treated at home using the following measures:

✔ Apply the R.I.C.E. method.

✔ Do not apply heat during the first two days as this will only increase swelling.

5
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
✔ Use paracetamol for the first day of the injury, to reduce pain without increasing
bleeding.
✔ Apply arnica oil to reduce swelling.
✔ Remove rings immediately if the injury is to the hand or fingers.
✔ After 48 hours, start moving the limb gently, but only enough not to cause pain
✔ Gradually increase the range of movement – let pain be your guide.

HOME TREATMENT for FRACTURES/ DISLOCATIONS

✔ Apply the R.I.C.E. method.

✔ Keep the limb in the position you found it and place soft padding around the broken
bones.
✔ Splint the injury with something rigid, such as rolled up newspaper or magazines,
to prevent the bones from shifting.
✔ Splints must be long enough to extend beyond joints above and below the fracture.
✔ If there is an open fracture, cover it with a clean gauze pad. Apply pressure to
control bleeding.
✔ Do not try to push the bone back into the wound and do not attempt to clean it.
✔ Get medical attention immediately.
✔ Fractures of the femur and pelvis may cause severe internal bleeding.
✔ Do not give the person anything to eat or drink in case surgery is needed.

In the next phase, you will be given more activities to enhance and
deepen your understanding of the lesson.
