SPECIALIZED FIELDS IN POULTRY PRODUCTION


The modern trend in poultry production is towards specialization. The farmer chooses what
production area he is interested in and specializes in this particular field.
The major areas in the poultry business that involves actual production programs are divided
into three categories.
C.1. Breeding Farm
A poultry breeding farm in the real essence of the field is a system of researching or
discovering the best combination of genes of parent stocks that will be the source of commercial
chicks for the poultry producers.
The essential segments of a poultry breeding farm are the grandparents and/or parent stock
flocks, a hatchery and a distribution system for selling chicks.
C.2. Egg Farm
Egg production is the older scheme of poultry production engaged in by many raisers.
Formerly, an egg farmer is also a breeder but recent developments in the industry make the egg
farmer raise chickens just for table egg production.
Two Phase of Egg Farm Operation
1. Raising of Pullets only
2. Raising of pullet up to laying stage
C.3. Broiler Farm
Broiler farming is the most recent specialized field in the Philippines. This is the growing of
meat-type chicken essentially for meat production. Stocks used for this purpose are so called
broiler-type chicks which are known for their fast growth, meaty conformation and good feed
conversion. They are marketed and slaughter for meat.
A broiler raiser depends on the supply of chicks from a franchised hatchery in the category of
breeder farm. Both male and female chicks are utilized for growing broilers, However, the males
grow faster than females.
C.4. Support/Complementary Industries
Each of these three specialized fields in the production of poultry and eggs are further
dependent on other specialized industry that contributed to the successful operations of the other
units.
C.4.1. Support or Complimentary Industries
a. Feed Milling Industry
Most poultry raisers (poultry breeder farms, egg farms and broiler farms) are dependent
totally or partially for their feed from the feed millers. The set-up has been very successful to
the point that if the feed milling industry is haletd, the entire poultry industry will also stop.
This industry has done a very good job in the development and achievements of the poultry
as a whole.

management, health and safety management and environmental Management System.

This group of inputs for poultry production is very vital to the poultry industry. Without
these segments, poultry diseases can not be controlled and production can be uneconomical.

on design, development, manufacturing and distribution of animal health products; and
provision of laboratory serervices for wuality analysis and packaging services of veterinary

contributes to economical production. Feeder, waterers, feed mixers, crates, automatic
devices to ease labor have been contributing to better poultry production programs at present.
The poultry raisers can depend on such facilities.

d. Poultry and Egg Processing, Storage and Distribution of Products


This segment of the poultry industry is very important since without the proper
processing and marketing channels of poultry products, the producers may not be able to
dispose off all their products, Proper marketing is the ultimate area in order to facilitate more
production at profitable levels.
