areas. Your task has got you thinking about how policies impact you in your role. Choose one policy and explain
how it impacts your curriculum and role. In an email to your director of quality, explain the above in a precise and
easy to read format. Is there any room for improvement in the way this policy is implemented and managed? Add
any recommendations into your email.

Case study-IT Policy and Impact on Curriculum 4.2

Adam works in a local college teaching Business related subjects

In his lessons he requires learner to research different businesses, often these external websites are blocked. Adam is
required to send a service request to the IT helpdesk to unblock specific web addresses.
In addition ‘You Tube’ is blocked for teachers and learners. This means that Adam cannot show video clips which would
be useful to enhance teaching and learning.
Adam has working with these problems for 4 weeks since the start of the academic term. This week learners are
researching a company of their choice in different industry sectors. Adam asked each learner for the company
website they would like unblocked and submitted an IT service request before the research lesson began. During the
lesson several learners wanted to change their company or investigate competitor companies. Adam quickly submits
IT service requests. Whilst learners are waiting several have logged onto a gaming site via a proxy server which
bypasses the college’s IT security. Adam quickly deals with the issue, reminding students that they have signed the
IT policy and this action breaches their contract which may leave them without access to the internet at college.
After the lesson Adam is very frustrated that the policy creates more work for him but the security is vulnerable from
learners who are very savvy with technology. He decides to write to the Head of IT with his concerns and
recommendations.

Make a list of what Adam could say in his email to explain how this policy is affecting his curriculum, teaching &
learning. Use the following headlines as guidance.
● Current access for teaching and any problems this creates
● Current access for learning and any problems this creates
● Access needed for teaching for the curriculum
● Access needed for learning for the curriculum
● Any other factors for consideration
