What I Need to Know

Respiratory and Circulatory Systems

Working with the other Organ Systems

Everyday, our body performs several tasks. When we eat, walk and even when we
are just sleeping, our cells work hand in hand for in other cells in the our body parts to
continue their specific tasks. They also need to remove wastes to continue its functions.
Maybe ,we not so aware of these things but definitely, our body performs like a machine.
Just any other machine, to utilize its maximum potentials, we must take care of our body
properly.
Having a healthy lifestyle are some of the important jobs that we must do as the
owner of this fascinating machine.
In the past lessons, you were introduced to the different levels of organizations in
the human body and the mechanisms involved in it. You have learned that the human body
is composed of different systems, which are collections of cells, tissues, and organs, each of
which has a special job that keeps you alive. Whether you eat, play, dance, sing, or sleep;
each part of your organ system performs specific functions. In Grade 7, cells, tissues, organs
were introduced in your lesson as basis understanding the different organs systems in the
body .

In this module, you will be learning two of the organ systems that perform important
roles in the distribution of essential materials in the body.

So, let us explore more and have fun. Good Luck!

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. explain the mechanism on how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together
to transport nutrients, gases, and molecules to and from the different parts of the
body;
2. infer how one’s lifestyle can affect the functioning of respiratory and circulatory
systems.

In this Module, you will be able to answer the following

KEY QUESTIONS

 How do the respiratory and circulatory systems work with each other?
 How do the diseases in the circulatory and respiratory systems begin to develop?
 How can a person’s lifestyle affect the performance of the respiratory and circulatory
systems?

What’s In

The human respiratory system is as series of organs responsible for taking in

oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide. The primary organs of the respiratory system are the
lungs which carry out this exchange of gases as we breathe.

The lungs work together with the circulatory system to pump oxygen-rich blood to
all cells in the body. The blood then collects carbon dioxide and other waste products and
transports them back to the lungs, where they ‘re pumped out of the body when we exhale.

Both systems are essentially meant for each other. The common purpose could not
be attained without the other system

ACVITY 1: Let’s Try This One!!

What’s New

Below are pictures of the different parts of the Respiratory System. Take a look at
each picture and its description as well as its function to understand more how each part
works in the breathing system of human.

PARTS OF THE DESCRIPTION/ FUNCTION

RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM
The respiratory system allows us to breathe and exchange
carbon dioxide for oxygen. It is a series of organ systems
responsible for taking oxygen and expelling dioxide.

This is the nasal cavity. It is the uppermost part of the respiratory

system and provides the nasal passage for inhaled air from
nostrils.

It is commonly known as the windpipe, this is the large tube that

delivers air from the nasal passage to the bronchi.

These are also known as the air sacs. These small bags of air
are in the lungs that take up the oxygen you breathe in and keep
your body going. You have about 480 million of alveoli in your
lungs. When you breathe in the alveoli expand to take in oxygen.
When you breathe out, the alveoli shrink to expel carbon dioxide

From the windpipe, separates into two branches, called bronchial

tubes or bronchi, one entering each lung.

The bronchi subdivide many times inside the lungs, analogous to

the branching pattern of grapes, finally becoming hair like tubes
called bronchioles

5
These are the lungs that process the gas exchange during
respiration

A diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscular partition separating

the thorax from the abdomen in mammals. It plays a major role in
breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax
and so inflates the lungs.

KEY CONCEPTS

The air that we breathe is composed of different gases. Oxygen is on e

of the gases that is very essential to our body. On the other hand, gases like
carbon dioxide needs to be removed out the body when we exhale. Here is
the sequence of how the air goes in and out of our respiratory system.

The air we breathe goes through the nose. Inside the nose are small
hair called cilia which traps dirt . Then into our nasal passages, and then
through trachea or windpipe. which separates into two branches,
called bronchial tubes or bronchi, one entering each lung.

The bronchi subdivide many times inside the lungs. It is like a

branching pattern of grapes. These hair like parts are called bronchioles. In
the last part of the terminal bronchioles are tiny bubble-like bunch of
structures called alveoli or air sacs. Exchange of gases happens here.

These parts of the human respiratory system are very important in the human
breathing process and the exchanges of important gases in the body such as oxygen
and the removal of wastes from the cells which are the carbon dioxide. Let us go
further and discover how the human respiratory works as we inhale and exhale.

6
Breath In… and Breath Out.

Let us study the mechanism of our lungs and diaphragm during respiration.
Try to observe the mechanism of the lungs and the diaphragm when we breathe in
and breathe out.

1. When you inhale, your diaphragm contracts.

Inhaling moves the diaphragm down and
expands the chest cavity.
2. Simultaneously, the ribs move and increase the
size of the chest cavity. There is now more
space and less air pressure inside the lungs.
3. Air pushes in from the outside where there is a
higher pressure. It pushes into the lungs where
there is a lower air pressure.

4. When you breathe out, or exhale. the diaphragm

muscle relaxes. The diaphragm and ribs return to
their original place.

5. The diaphragm and ribs return to their original

place. The chest cavity returns to its original size
There is now lesser space and greater air
pressure inside the lungs. It pushes the air to the
outside where there is a lower air pressure.

Try to breathe in and breathe out. This will help you to gain more oxygen and
release carbon dioxide. This breathing exercise will make your lungs and as well as
your heart healthy. Oxygen in the body helps the cell to perform several functions for
our body to function well.

7
What is It

The Human Circulatory System

Now that we are through with respiratory system, let us have a closer look of
our heart. Let us sing together by following the lyrics below and   discover the parts and
functions of the heart which serves to be the main organ of the circulatory system.

What’s More

A One-Way Street…
Look at your fist. Our heart is just like the size of our close fist. It is a hollow muscle,
located just behind and slightly left of the breastbone. It pumps blood through the network of
arteries and veins called the cardiovascular system. It has four chambers with specific
tasks to do: two ventricles and two atria. The atria are the receiving chambers of the heart,
accepting blood from the body (right atrium) and from the lungs (left atrium). The ventricles
are the pumping chambers, moving blood to the lungs (right ventricle) and into the body
(left ventricle)

The flow of the blood inside the heart is like a one-way street. Why? Observe the blood
as it flows inside the chambers and blood vessels of the heart. The blood flows like in a one-
way street, wherein cars do not go back where it came from. There is no turning back of the
blood from one chamber to the other chamber. This is made possible by the valves between
each chamber. If the blood flows back. Stroke may happen.

ACTIVITY 2: Just Go with The Flow

Using the illustration of the heart and the arrows leading to the direction of the blood, try
to explain the pathway of the blood inside the heart. The arrows and the number will give
you the clue.
DEOXYGENATED BLOOD

1. Superior Vena Cava

2. Right Atrium
3. Right Ventricle
4. Pulmonary Artery

OXYGENATED BLOOD

5. Pulmonary Vein
6. Left Atrium
7. Left Ventricle
8. Aorta

Now, trace the pathway of blood by filling up the boxes below with the correct parts based on
the illustration of the hear

9
What I Have Learned

Blood circulates around the body into three different ways. The lungs and the heart
coordinate with one another for the exchange of gases, and the transport of blood that is rich
in oxygen for the cell use. Study the table below to understand how the blood circulates
inside the body which involves the coordination of the circulatory and the respiratory system

TYPES OF CIRCULATIONS IN THE BODY

TYPES OF BLOOD DESCRIPTION DIAGRAM

CIRCULATION

1. Pulmonary Movement of the blood from

Circulation the heart to the lungs and
back to the heart

2. Coronary Movement of the blood

Circulation through the tissues of the
heart

3. Systemic Movement of the blood from

Circulation the heart to the rest of the
body excluding the lungs

The main function of the circulatory system or the cardio vascular system is to
deliver oxygen to the body tissues and simultaneously removing carbon dioxide produced by
metabolism. Oxygen is bound to molecules called hemoglobin that are on the surface of the
red blood cells in the blood.
