GROUP ASSIGNMENT / ESSAY

Weightage: 35%
Group: Strictly 4 to 5 members
Word count: Not more than 3000 words in total
Date of Submission: Week 8 (Monday 23rd May by 9.00am, Submit to ELearn Turnitin)

This assignment is to be assessed based on a group essay and it consists of 2 questions based on
your chosen company. Students are required to answer all questions and follow strictly to the
submission date given above.

Requirements:

Assume that you are the management consultant of a Public Listed or Multi-National
Company. You are required to study and understand its management approach/perspective
and strategies.

Note: Students must check with their respective tutor to ensure the company chosen is
appropriate. The company can be from any country of your choice but must be one where
sufficient information for the Group Assignment can be found.

Your group essay must answer both the questions below, clearly identifying each of the two
parts.

Question 1:
Identify and discuss the management approach/perspective that is currently used by your
chosen company. Identify TWO (2) challenges that your chosen company face and analyse
these challenges in relation to their management approach/perspective

Question 2:

a) Identify and describe with examples the corporate-level strategy adopted by your
chosen company.
b) Identify and describe with examples the business-level strategy adopted by your chosen
company.
c) Using SWOT analysis and Porter’s Five Forces Model.
i. Should your chosen company change either their corporate level or business-
level strategies (choose either ONE of the strategies for discussion)?
ii. What is the solution to the TWO (2) challenges you identified in Question 1?

TOTAL MEMBERS
Strictly 4 to 5 members

Group forming for group assignment & presentation should be minimum of 4 and a maximum of
5 students per group. Please send your list of member names to your respective tutors. However,
if you do not have a group your tutor will randomly allocate you into a group. Group members
shall be from within your own tutorial class.

FORMAT
 The standard structure and format of the assignment should incorporate the following:
(i) Cover page to include (Template in Elearn):
 The course title and code
 Program Studied, Student’s names and ID numbers
 Name of Subject Module Leader
 Tutorial Group and Name of Tutor
(ii) Body of the essay
 Question 1
 Question 2 (a, b & c)
(iv) References (10 references in total)
(v) Appendices (i.e. SWOT analysis & Porter’s Five Forces Model)
 Font: Times New Roman, size:12 and single line spacing, Margin: Top, Bottom, Left
and Right with 1 inch.
 All tables and figures (if any) are to be renamed as Exhibits and serially numbered, and
sequentially make references to them in the text. For example, if you name a table as
Exhibit 1, you refer to them in the body of your text as follow: “As seen in Exhibit 1 …”.
All tables and figures must be presented in the Appendix. Tables and figures should carry
explanatory notes or legends for clarity or to indicate the source, as necessary; all
abbreviations should be expanded.
 Appendices should be kept to a minimum and only contain reference materials
illustrating and supporting arguments made in the main body of the work. Any other
materials included in appendices, except where specifically requested in the coursework
instructions, will not be marked.
 Word count includes everything in the main body of the text (including citations, quotes,
lists, etc.). The list of references and appendixes are NOT included in the word count.
 There is ONE standard referencing systems: APA 7th style

WORD COUNT 4
3,000 words maximum

All questions of the assignment have a required word count to which you must adhere, with a
10% leeway/tolerance. You need to state an accurate word count at the end of your work (i.e.
word count after each question).

An assignment under the word count (including the 10% leeway) will still be accepted
without any penalties. Note that a low word count is likely to compromise your chances of
receiving a good grade or even passing the assignment. It is because it usually indicates that the
subject has not been covered in enough depth. Penalties for over-length assignment: 5 marks
will be deducted from your total assignment marks received.

SIMILARITY INDEX REPORT

The assignment must be submitted to Turnitin for a Similarity Index Report. The index threshold
for the assignment is 15% for the whole assignment which includes Q1 & Q2. Penalties for non-
compliance: 5 marks will be deducted for similarity above 15% but below 30%. For similarity
index above 30%, the tutor will use their discretion on deciding the penalty to be applied.

Submission to Turnitin at eLearn

Similarity Limit:  15% or Below or else penalty applies.

GROUP ADMINISTRATION
In the event of a conflict within members in a group, students should undertake the following
process prior to presenting their concerns to the tutor:
- Students should address issues early (do not leave the problem until the week before the
assignment is due)
- Call a meeting with all group members to discuss a concern or a breach of
contract/agreement
If resolution is not achieved, request mediation with the assistance from the tutor.

SOURCES
 Minimum ten (10) peer-reviewed journals, books/e-books or company official
reports/websites. Please use academic sources such as journal articles, conference papers
and books, and other sources such as company official websites and reports to support
your answer.
 Non-peer reviewed online sources of information such as ‘Wikipedia’ and ‘answers.com’
are not acceptable references.
 Wikipedia has a wide range of information that can be useful to read when you are first
trying to understand a topic. Wiki pages sometimes also have references or links to
further information that could be useful for your assignments. However, if you take the
time to read the sources listed in the References section of a Wikipedia page, these
sources themselves may be acceptable if you reference them directly.
 Penalty: Essay did not meet ten (10) peer-reviewed journals, books/e-books or
company official reports/websites referencing requirements (deduct 5 marks)
