L1C11 - Complex Numbers

This document is the introduction to a lecture on complex numbers. It begins by motivating complex numbers through the solutions to quadratic equations, and introduces the definition of a complex number as a sum of a real part and an imaginary part. It then discusses representing complex numbers as points on an Argand diagram plane. The outline lists topics to be covered, including the Argand diagram, arithmetic of complex numbers, modulus and argument, and polar form.

x is called the real part of z, denoted by Re(z)
y is called the imaginary part of z, denoted by Im(z).

Example. The complex number z = 2 + 3j. Then 2 is the real

z1 = r1 (cos θ1 + j sin θ1 ) and z2 = r2 (cos θ2 + j sin θ2 )

z1 z2 = r1 r2 (cos θ1 + j sin θ1 )(cos θ2 + j sin θ2 )

= r1 r2 [cos θ1 cos θ2 − sin θ1 sin θ2 )
+ j(sin θ1 cos θ2 + cos θ1 sin θ2 )]

z1 z2 = r1 r2 [cos(θ1 + θ2 ) + j sin(θ1 + θ2 )].

|z1 z2 | = r1 r2 = |z1 ||z2 | . (7)

arg(z1 z2 ) = θ1 + θ2 = arg z1 + arg z2 . (8)
