Door holding is the act of ensuring that a person behind the door holder does not have
to put full effort into opening the door themselves. This can be done fully (opening the
door wide), partially (holding the door at least halfway), or not at all (letting the person
behind the holder deal with opening the door themselves. A reasonable distance for
door holding to occur would be around ten feet, as this would keep the holder from
having to stand there for more than two or three seconds and go out of their way
Variables Measured:
1. Sex: The sex of the door holder was taken into account in this expeiment. It was
explored whether or not the sex of the holder would infuelce the outcome of the
trial.
2. Distance of person from holdee and door: The distance between the person the
door is being held for and the door holder may also be critical. This distance
decision to hold the door for another person. A person in rainy weather may be
more inclined to not hold the door compared to someone in sunny and warm
weather.
4. Group size: The number of people accompanying the door holder could also be a
factor. Whether or not larger groups of people hold doors for others would be an
Raw Data:
Summary:
After observing door holding around 11 pm at Wawa, it was concluded that none of the
variables that I chose to observe factored into the results. There were instances where
people farther away from the door still got the door held for them (see trials 2, 13, 19)
and there were even instances when someone relatively close to the door (see trials 4,
5, 14) where the door was not held. Weather remained rather constant throughout the
course of the experiment, so it was a non factor. Group size did not appear to influence
the results either, as there were instances in the experiment where different groups
opened and did not open doors and the same happened for single people. A majority of
people ended up holding the door for another person regardless of other outside
factors.
