Smoother G Learning

This document provides instructions for setting the transmission control module (TCM) on a vehicle, including programming the vehicle identification number (VIN), erasing learned values using a memory clear switch or scan tool, performing CLU/GSU position learning, clutch learning, neutral learning, clutch control magnetic valve learning, and gear-in learning. The steps provided for each procedure include connecting diagnostic tools, turning the ignition on/off, shifting the transmission lever, and monitoring indicator lights to determine when learning is complete.

TCM Setting

1. TCM Setting

1. VIN programming

1) Connect a scan tool to the DLC.

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Select the scan tool item.

 Diagnostics
 Transmission
 Smoother-G
 Programming
 Program VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

4) Input the VIN code by following the on-screen instructions.

5) After inputting the VIN code, turn OFF the ignition switch.

2. TCM Writing

1. Erasing learned values (Using the memory clear switch)

1) Turn ON the ignition switch.

2) Place the change lever into the N position.

3) Check that the gear shift indicator displays N.

4) Strongly depress the brake pedal.

5) Depress the clutch pedal.

6) Connect the memory clear switch for 2 seconds or more, then disconnect.

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Place the change lever into the N position.

4) Check that the gear shift indicator displays N.

5) Select the scan tool item.

 Transmission
 Smoother-G
 Special Function
 Gear Learned Value Clear/Clutch Learned Value Clear

6) Erase the learned values by following the on-screen instructions.

3. CLU/GSU position learning

When replacing the TCM, transmission, GSU, or CLU, or when repositioning the GSU/CLU shift position sensor or select
position sensor, GSU/CLU position learning must be performed.

1) Confirm that the smoother emergency switch is OFF.

2) Check that the parking brake operates properly.

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

Note:
 The engine does not start.

4) Check if the gear shift indicator is flashing.

5) Place the change lever into the D position.

6) Press the skip shift switch.

Caution:
 Learning will not be performed if the switch is pressed and held for 2 seconds or more.

7) The gear shift starts and the gear display changes.

8) When the gear shift indicator stops flashing and the gear is displayed, learning is complete.

9) Place the change lever into the N position.

4. Clutch learning

The Smoother-G system automatically performs clutch learning in order to absorb changes to the clutch disengagement
position caused by fluctuations in clutch disc wear and link system play, as well as for consistently stable clutch control and
in order to maintain smooth driving performance.

5. Neutral learning (N learning) and clutch control magnetic valve learning

Neutral learning (N learning): Learning the clutch engagement starting point stroke with the gear in neutral.

Clutch control magnetic valve learning: Learning the position where the clutch control magnetic valve has not intake or
exhaust (neutral).

Clutch control magnetic valve learning condition

 The gear is in neutral.

 Vehicle speed is 0 km/h.
 The PTO switch is OFF.

Setting Page 3 of 3
 The clutch pedal is not depressed.
 The engine speed is 300 rpm or more.
 No DTC is set.
 CLU position learning is complete.
 Neutral learning is complete.
 Air tank internal pressure is the predetermined value or more.
 The low pressure switch is OFF.

1) Place the change lever into the N position.

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Check that the gear shift indicator displays N.

4) Start the engine.

5) The skip shift indicator light flashes for approximately 7 seconds, and when it stops flashing, learning is complete.

Note:
 After neutral learning, clutch control magnetic valve learning will continue to be performed only during initial
learning after the ignition switch is turned ON. Until neutral learning and clutch control magnetic valve
learning are both complete, the skip shift indicator light will flash for approximately 12 seconds. After learning
is complete, the display will change based on the skip shift switch condition.

6. Gear-in learning

Perform even after neutral learning is complete if the feeling is poor during vehicle start-up.

1) Place the change lever into the N position.

2) Check that the parking brake operates properly.

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Check that the gear shift indicator displays N.

5) Start the engine.

6) Depress the brake pedal.

7) Press the skip shift switch for 2 seconds or more.

8) While pressing the skip shift switch, shift the change lever into D.

9) Check if the gear shift indicator is flashing.

10) Gradually engage the clutch as engine speed increases. If the gear shift indicator stops flashing, learning is
complete.

11) Place the change lever into the N position.
