Introduction of the Mathematical function is an expression, rule, or law that defines

subject: “mathematical a relationship between one variable which is an independent
functions” (cinematic variable, and another variable which is the dependent variable.
preview) Functions are ubiquitous in mathematics and are essential for
formulating physical relationships in the sciences.

The first definition of mathematical functions was first given in

1837 by the German mathematician Peter Dirichlet: According to
him, if a variable y is so related to a variable x that whenever a
numerical value is assigned to x, there is a rule according to
which a unique value of y is determined, then y is said to be a
function of the independent variable x.

This relationship is commonly symbolized as y = f(x)—which is

said “f of x”—and y and x are related such that for every x, there
is a unique value of y. That is, f(x) can not have more than one
value for the same x.The set of values of x is called the domain
of the function, and the set of values of f(x) generated by the
values in the domain is called the range of the function.

All these were by The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica

But if given the definition of mathematical functions, what do you

think are its important roles in the field of Scientists,
Engineering, and Mathematics itself?

Today, our questions will be answered by those directly from

these environments.

Host 1 - greetings Good day everybody! I am Aerin Beatrice

Palicpic.
And, this is J-Card:oneTalk - the talk that is
extraordinary…Today is an episode of
knowing what’s more about the matter of
mathematical functions. We are going to talk
with three professionals and starting off, let
me introduce this expert by her credentials.

- She is a graduate from Lincoln

University, Jefferson City, MO in 2016
with a B.S. in Natural Science.
- She also had her M.S. in Natural
Science at the same university -
summa cum laude in 2018
specializing in Conservation Biology.
- She became a Natural Sciences Lab
Assistant to Dr. Palmer, a professor
and senior researcher at North
Carolina State University, Raleigh,
NC. Back then, she conducted
experiments and collected key data
points.
- In addition to this, she supervised
undergraduate students during
laboratory sessions, ensuring all
safety standards were met and
maintained in Carolina State
University.
- She graduated with a B.S. in
Statistics, Emphasis in Data Science,
minor in Mathematics at Brigham
Young University.
- And, at present, year 2022, she is
taking a Ph.D. in Integrative and
Conservation Biology. in University of
Central Florida, Orlando, FL.

Now, with her critical thinking, high-level

comprehension, scientific ethics, and
specialized knowledge, here with us is
Professor Reilsten Bates!

Scientist Wow! Thank you so much for inviting me to

be here! It is an honor to be in this
ever-amazing talk show…

Host 1 No, professor, it is our honor to have you

here. So, how are you today? We heard that
you are currently studying for a new
specialization.

Scientist Uhmm, yes, that’s right! Because you know, I

realized that I’ve been working for so long at
my long-stay university which is the North
Carolina State University, so I wanted to take
another specialization to you know, nurture
my knowledge, serve the emerging
generation, and to really apply mathematics
in the world of Science.

Host 1 Impressive! That is impressive! Are you not

tired of studying yet?

Scientist No, of course no

Host 1 If that’s so, let’s get started

(vid clip animation)

Host 1 It was mentioned that mathematical functions

really have a lot of applications. Can you spot
a few simpler ones that are applicable in our
everyday life or in casual reality?

Scientist Hmm, yes, I agree with you that this one is

really a broad one but you know if we are to
understand what it really means, even without
thinking for so long, everybody can say some.
So, I think uhmm, in the case of having our
own active passports. You know, that is
something that cannot be owned by other
people - just you because it’s your own.

Host 1 What type of function does that comprises?

Scientist It’s one-to-one that it happens to be that

owning a passport is a function.

Host 1 Okay, crystal clear. And, just to add you

know…I do not know if this is right but yah,

Can monthly salary be an example of

function? Because you know, everytime we
receive our salaries, there is a lot of
distribution that happens.

Scientist Yes, that is! An example of function.

Host 1 But, moving on, let’s get to the point. So,

since we already know that there are multiple
applications of mathematical functions, let us
know from your side, in your field - what are
the important roles of mathematical
functions?
Scientist Okay, so actually, we really cannot separate
Mathematics and Science when it comes to
our field, of course. So, basically, we use
these functions in making mathematical
models that soon, us, scientists, will use to
understand quantifiable phenomena.

Host 1 Can you give some you know a little bit of

applications…

Scientist Of course, yah. So, let’s focus on a situation

wherein the input when strengthened, makes
the output much more powerful.

“Sine qua non” - in English, it pertains to

something absolutely special. So, with this
idea, it will be our guide in making sense of
the concept of all. You know, put sense on the
overall, something like that.

Host 1 Sine qua non, sine qua non.

Scientist First, we use mathematical functions to model

the real-world in organizing the physical
world.

For instance, we expand our repertoire of

familiar functions for mathematical modeling
in order to have a versatile and powerful
means of analyzing and describing their
world.

Host 1 Okay, so what we do with mathematical

functions is that we like, imagine?

Scientist Yes. As scientists, you have to think out of the

box. You need to expand your knowledge so
you can have many powerful skills. But, this
is in general yet, okay?

Wait, let me give another one that’s

applicable in general.

Student’s knowledge. So, as the students’

knowledge of mathematics for example, and
their ability of using a wide range of
representation increase, the connections they
make with other disciplines, especially with
science and social sciences, give them
greater mathematical power.
It actually is like the more profound your
knowledge in mathematics and more
connections in other disciplines are, the
greater your mathematical power will be.
Why? ........... because one is able to
integrate different disciplines by the help of
functions.

Host 1 Okay, so it’s like, let the x be the knowledge

in different cores while y is that one specific
subject wherein these different disciplines is
applied. Or in your case, mathematics with
other disciplines are the x while science is the
“y”.

Scientist Yes, because science requires a lot

especially if you are to specialize in one.

Host 1 Okay, we get that. What’s more from your

field that uses mathematical functions?

Scientist Well, we also use mathematical functions to

constitute an essential means of describing,
explaining, and predicting real world
phenomena.

For example, let us use my understanding of

O'Callaghan's conceptual framework.

So, it was here that the problem-solving

environment consists of 4 component
competencies: modeling, interpreting,
translating, and reifying which are the roots of
making mathematical models including the
utilization of mathematical functions.

The first three component competencies now

therefore are being linked to the process
conception while the reifying component is to
the object conception.

And, for your information, object conception is

the understanding of knowledge as objects
that are permanent while process conception
is the first step in the acquisition of new
mathematical notions.

Host 1 So, what now? What is the connection of

these component competencies to
mathematical functions?

Scientist Great question!

So, just to share you know, back then, when I

was in North Carolina State University, since I
was something like “working” there, we had
an experiment with silver - activated silver.

Host 1 What is activated silver?

Scientist Well, actually, when we talk about its

definition, I can only say that you know, it can
be used as a topical to treat skin irritations,
burns, wounds, and infections - more on
health concerns. But you know setting aside,
we did this experiment back then for the
purpose of investigating the phenomenon of
radioactivity.

What has happened is that a small silver

probe is placed in a neutron source.
Afterwards, it was irradiated for 15 minutes
then measured for 400 seconds. And, as an
effect, we had a graph wherein we can see
how the activity decreases the time there.

Host 1 Why? I mean, why did it happen that the time

decreased? And, where are mathematical
functions here?

Scientist First, the reason why the time decreased is

due to the radioactivity. Like what I’ve said,
the silver was irradiated, and so on, that is
why the time decreased which was originally
400 seconds.

Host 1 Okay, I get that but can you recall what was
the result?

Scientist No, that was too far already.

Host 1 Accepted but the mathematical functions?

Where are those in this application?

Scientist Remember the four component

competencies? Modeling, interpreting,
translating, and reifying? Again, they are the
roots of mathematical models. And,
mathematica; functions are incorporated in
making mathematical models.
Host 1 Ohhh! Okay! So, basically, the use of
mathematical functions in this field is to make
mathematical models by the help of the four
component competencies?

Scientist Absolutely! But, like others, we encounter

problems too.

From the experiment, we can note that the

context problems are rooted in this reality
while, on the other hand, solving these
context problems becomes a helping hand
expanding the reality.

Host 1 Okay, so, problems are in reality but problems

may also expand one's reality - which is
actually an example of function too because
letting the problems be the “x” while the
reality be “y”, it resembles a “many-to-one”
relationship? Right?

Scientist Yes.

Host 1 Okay, I am learning now.

Scientist But wait, now, from these, we can say that we

can use both mathematics and physics as a
reference in engaging to modeling activities
wherein functions play a significant role
through the 4 component competencies - the
modeling itself, interpreting, translating, and
reifying.

Host 1 That’s the application of mathematical

functions! Okay, understood.

So, it has been a long discussion, thank you

for accepting J-card:oneTalk’s invitation,
Professor! Indeed, everything that happened
was informative.

Scientist Thank you, Aerin! It is just to make this

informative so that you know our viewers can
learn so much even by just watching!

Host 1 Thank you so much, professor, and good luck

on your Phd!
Up next, the one-to-one interview, (oh that’s a
function!), with one of the most amazing
engineers of all time.
We’ll be back just here at the J-Card:oneTalk!

Scene 3 - Engineer

On Cam Audio Lines

Host 2 Welcome back to the J-Card:oneTalk!

A while ago, with Professor Reilsten Bates,
she discussed multiple roles of mathematical
functions in the field of scientists. Those are:

- To model the real-world in organizing

the physical world.
- To constitute essential means of
describing, explaining, and predicting
real world phenomena.
- And, the experiment with activated
silver wherein the first two roles were
then applied.

Now, let’s take a time in the field of

engineering.

To introduce him,
- He finished B.Sc. in Industrial
Engineering at Clemson University,
Clemson, SC in 2015 with Dean’s List.
- He received certification on
Methods-Time Measurements (MTM)
in 2015, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt in
2016, and Project Management
Professional (PMP) in 2019
- He presented in the conferences of
IISE 2019, and attended the INCOSE
in 2017 to 2019.
- He also had his masters - Master of
Industrial and Systems Engineering at
Auburn University - College of
Engineering.
- And, like the professor earlier, this
man is also currently taking a doctoral
degree. Ph.D. - Industrial and
Systems Engineering at the same
university - Auburn University -
college of engineering.
Let us welcome, Engr. Trevin Stanton!
Welcome, engineer!

Engineer Thank you, thank you so much!

Host 2 So, how have you been? Everybody’s so

busy right now, huh?

Engineer That’s right, that’s right but yah, I am doing

good especially now that I am pursuing a
doctorate degree as well.

Host 2 Wait, does a doctorate degree lead you to be

a doctor? Like the doctors we have?

Engineer Eventually, when the study is done, yes it will

make us doctors but not the typical doctor we
have in the medical field. Instead, we will be
doctors of our field.

Host 2 Ohhh! You’re not going to be a physical

doctor, I was so curious a while ago, okay.

So, now, are you ready?

Engineer I was born ready!

Host 2 Alright! Let’s get to the main talk!

(vid clip preview)

Host 2 Mathematical functions, let’s talk about this.

What is your, you know, greatest knowledge
about this?

Engineer Hmm, okay. So, basically, mathematical

function is a rule wherein inputs have their
corresponding values. Like for us, industrial
engineers, we use this rule to design,
develop, test, and evaluate integrated
systems for managing industrial production
processes.

Host 2 Okay, wow. What more am I going to ask you,

you already applied engineering but
whatever, so mathematical functions are
really for designing?

Engineer Yes

Host 2 Okay, that’s clear there but let’s make it easy

first. What do you think are other applications
of these functions? Like in everyday life?

Engineer Hmm, do you play in an arcade?

Host 2 Yes, of course, that’s mostly everybody’s

pastime.

Engineer Okay, so, let’s not go with the arcade.

Instead, let’s go beyond the arcade. I don’t
know if every arcade has this but in the place
where we, engineers play, there is a soda
machine for like you know, if you get tired and
thirsty, you have to pay and get what drink
you want in there.

Host 2 So, that’s an example of function because…?

Engineer Because whenever we input the money, our

payment, we’ll receive the product.

Host 2 Ahh, basically, “x” is money then “y” is

product… Alright, I wasn’t aware that
engineers have the time to go for arcades, it
doesn’t sound like you go.

Engineer Of course, we also need, you know, free time

to relax, enjoy, rediscover ourselves, and just
hang out like after every successful project.

Host 2 Wow. That’s nice that you have that mindset

but going forward, what is the role of
mathematical functions in your field? The
engineering? I think there are lots of this
because engineering has a lot of math, so
yes, what are its roles?

Engineer Okay, so first and foremost, mathematical

functions in engineering basically revolve
around designing, conceptualizing, solving of
course, analyzing, and developing algorithms.

But as an application, there is this one

software wherein mathematical functions are
widely used.

Host 2 What is that software?

Engineer Matlab.

Host 2 Matlab? Okay, is it because you love

mathematics so much?

Engineer Yes, it may be but talking about the technical

side, engineers, not just us industrialists, use
matlab to program, compute, and measure
scalar quantities as well as illustrations and
so much more.

For example, creating visualizations, So,

what we do in Matlab is that we identify
underlying patterns and trends in projects or
issues or even whatever situation may arise
with the help of function syntax and available
chart options using the integrated
documentation.

Host 2 Okay, that’s a clear one. Engineers, whatever

type of specialization they have, use matlab
for visualizations.

Engineer And, in MATLAB, it uses mathematical

functions to evaluate mathematical
expressions over a range of values as we do
our projects.

Host 2 Mmm, okay. That’s a direct role of functions -

to evaluate mathematical expressions. Okay,
aside from that, what else?

Engineer Mathworks. So, this is integrated into Matlab

because Matlab as it means, “Matrix
Laboratory”, is under Mathworks. Don’s be
confused, the developer of Matlab is
Mathworks.

And, Mathworks is for accelerating the pace

of engineering and science.

Host 2 Ohhh, okay. It’s like, the mother is Mathworks

while the baby is the Matlab.

Engineer Yes, that is definitely right. And, actually

mathematical functions can be drawn in this
situation, if you can notice.

Host 2 Oh yah, there is a one-to-one relationship

between Matlab and Mathworks. And,
evidently, as you mentioned, Matlab has a lot
of features. So, if we go back, domain will be
these features while range is the Matlab itself.
Engineer Yes, right! And, that was a many-to-one
relationship…

Host 2 Hmmmm, okay… but let’s go back, what are

other applications? Or what are the roles of
these mathematical functions in your field?

Engineer Well, for us IEs, those in supply chain or

logistics, we also use mathematical functions
there.

Like for example, addressing issues ranging

from supplier selection, demand, inventory,
facility, distribution, and other expenses.
Money is the input and to carefully use it, of
course, we have to budget. We need to
determine the financial capability of the
finances itself. So, everything that will follow
will be dependent on its domain or
independent for the range.

Host 2 That is for the logistics - the external

environment of the engineers like you.

Engineer Yes, definitely, it is the external ones. But in

engineering, you can combine the internal
and external areas through sustainable
systems design.

What we do here is that we minimize

environmental impact in projects while
cost-effectively delivering the goods and
services needed.

Host 2 Oh, it’s still your cover? I mean because there

are environmental engineers too. Is it still IE?

Engineer Yes, IEs are still associated when it comes to

these types of situations because it’s all about
the industry - on the pros and cons of
projects, the impacts and yes, still we are with
this.

Host 2 Okay, so that’s the combination of internal

and external? The Engineers designing for
example a project something like that then
still being with the external because it is their
project? Right?

Engineer Yes, we are because we optimize the

environmental performance of an individual
product or project to quantitatively assess its
performance.

Host 2 Wow. Engineers have a lot of work to do. And

by that, we thank you for joining us in this
episode.

Engineer Yes, of course, thank you so much, it is my

pleasure. Thank you Griffin, and
J-card:oneTalk, of course!

Host 2 So, viewers, don’t close your eyes, the

informative discussion still continues, and
later on, we will have the chance to talk with a
multi-awarded mathematician!

Only here, at J-Card:oneTalk!

Scene 4 - Mathematician

On Cam Audio Lines

Host 1 We are still here live at J-Card:oneTalk! So

earlier, with Engineer Trevin Stanton,
numbers of applications and roles of
mathematical functions were discussed.
Again, those are:

- To design, develop, test, and evaluate

integrated systems for managing
industrial production processes.
- To conceptualize, solve, and analyze
in a wider perspective wherein:
- Matlab by Mathworks is one of the
major applications due to its
numerous features that use
mathematical functions.
- In the area of supply chain or logistics.
- And, in optimizing the environmental
performance in order to conduct
quantitative assessment.

Now, at this point, let us proceed to our last

but not the least visitor.

To introduce her,

- She is a graduate from South Florida

Regional University, Bachelor of Arts
in mathematics, in 1981.
- Master of Arts in statistics in 2000 at
the same university.
- An assistant mathematician in the
LearnSystem Software, Atlanta, GA in
2003.
- She had her Applied Mathematics
Certification in 2007.
- She was a Math Lab Tutor in 2009 to
2011.
- A member of the American Statistical
Association in 2012.
- A Certified Associate in Project
Management, Project Management
Institute in 2013.
- A Research Mathematician in June
2014.

And now, the graduate of Doctor of

Philosophy in the University of Notre Dame: A
graduate school at Indiana, USA in 2018,
who’s currently working on a research paper
for the International Centre for Mathematical
Sciences (ICMS).

With us today, doctor Estrella Osborn!

Good day, doc!

Mathematician Good day as well, Griffin! It’s nice to be back

here at J-card!

Host 1 Wow! The last time you visited here, you

were a Math Lab tutor, and now, just wow! A
PhD currently working on research for one of
the most flexible mathematical research
centers based in Edinburgh!

Mathematician Thank you so much, thank you for inviting me

once again here.

Host 1 So, how are you, doc?

Mathematician I’m doing great, you know. I mean like I just

had a sentimental moment a few days ago
about how my life is going on. And, back
then, I realized that I was doing a lot after I
graduated.

Host 1 Yes, you are definitely doing a lot.

Mathematician Yah, but you if you enjoy what you are doing,
if you love this thing, that power that pushes
you through is greater than the tiredness you
feel along the way.

Host 1 Wow. I’m really speechless. I mean, like you

know, the last time we met.

Mathematician Yes, I know, and yah, this is me now, going

back to the home of J-Card:oneTalk!

Host 1 Okay, now, I know you already know how this

episode goes on.

If in the last time you visited us, you

discussed the significance of mathematics,
now, let’s talk about a specific matter - the
mathematical functions.

(vid clip preview)

Mathematician Alright.

Host 1 So, in what ways are mathematical functions

so important in this world?

Mathematician Well, primarily, mathematical functions make

sense of problems in solving them. As
problems arise in this world, with
mathematical functions, we continually make
theories about dependencies between
quantities in nature and society, which is one
way of solving the problem itself.

Host 1 Okay?

Mathematician And, actually not just that because by these

functions, it brings us to precision, for the
utilization of structure, and to reason
abstractly and quantitatively. With
mathematical functions, we understand the
world much better than we used to because
of the presence of mathematics that can be
observed everywhere in order to create,
develop, analyze, and solve conflicts toward
the world’s most reasonable environment.

Host 1 So, basically, these mathematical functions

allow us to become more specific with
everything to the point that we can solve
problems by these functions because the
mathematical functions are a need for the
continuous construction of theories.

Mathematician Yes.

Host 1 Okay, so now, in your field - in the

mathematics itself, what are the important
roles of mathematical functions?

Mathematician Mathematical models. Functions are

important tools in the construction of
mathematical models.

We use functions in the process of creating a

mathematical representation of a real-world
scenario to make a prediction or provide
insight.

So, it is like we use mathematical functions to

construct mathematical models that are used
in real-world situations.

Host 1 So, you are saying that the important role of

mathematical functions is its chain?

Mathematician Absolutely. Because as a mathematician, that

is how we use functions towards the
betterment of the world - in ways that we
know, can make the world much more precise
and reasonable.

And, actually, these functions do not only

apply to our field because we use
mathematical functions in natural sciences
and engineering disciplines, and even in
non-physical systems such as the social
sciences.

Host 1 Okay, I understand that but can you think of

an application of function in your field that is
being used today?

Mathematician Hmm. I think about the foundations of

mathematics and set theory. Because you
know, in this concept, it includes the Von
Neumann–Bernays–Gödel set theory - which
is what we are using right now in our
research paper. So, what this conveys is that
functions or mathematical functions are
critical in the development of the formalization
of the foundation of mathematics since it
requires another theory or other theories in
order to solve another case.

Host 1 Okay, let me know if this is correct or

incorrect.

What you have said is that mathematical

functions play a significant role in the
foundation of mathematics and set theory
because if used or tackled, another theory is
needed?

Mathematician Yes.

Host 1 Ohh, okay. That’s a general one there. How

about uhmm, in other disciplines, since you
are a mathematician, what do you think is the
important role again of functions in other
areas?

Mathematician Hmmm. I think about the application of

wavelets.

Yes wavelets - are applications of

mathematical functions - in the field of
Science.

Because based on what I remember,

wavelets have localized oscillatory features.

So, the frequency of the local oscillator and

frequency of the input signal will be the
domain for instance, while the range will be
the sum and difference frequencies produced
by the frequency conversion process.

And, btw, a local oscillator is an electronic

oscillator used with a mixer to change the
frequency of a signal.

Host 1 Okay, but wait, what is a local oscillator first?

Mathematician Oh, yah! So, a local oscillator - it is an

electronic oscillator used with a mixer to
change the frequency of a signal.

Host 1 Mmm, okay. So what happened here is that

the domains are the frequency of the local
oscillator and the frequency of the input
signal. Then range is the sum of both
frequencies - which by then, makes it a
function for it has a many-to-one relationship.

Mathematician Yes. That’s correct.

Host 1 Okay, then that, therefore concludes our

mathematician episode. Thank you so much
for joining us here, doctor Estrella Osborn!

Mathematician Thank you as well, it was nice to be back!

Host 1 Okay, thank you! Up next, we will be having

our recap of the episode!

Host 2 Okay, so for today’s episode, we have

witnessed how the three professionals - the
scientist, engineer, and mathematician view
the concept of mathematical functions. They
gave simple real-life applications!

Host 1 Apart from that, it was also discussed what

are the different applications of mathematical
functions in their own respective fields!

Host 2 With that, we are now aware that

mathematical functions really play important
roles in the development of society, and the
world in a broader aspect. However,
everything starts with a single step. So, you,
students, we are encouraging you to do good,
and give your best in studying because we
