Math 10 DLP (Week 9 Day 3)

This document provides a mathematics resource package for teaching rational root theorem to 10th grade students. It includes 5 activities: 1) finding roots of a polynomial equation, 2) completing a table of polynomial equations and their roots, 3) guided practice applying the rational root theorem, 4) thinking in pairs and sharing to find rational roots, and 5) further practice applying the rational root theorem to find all rational roots of a polynomial equation. The goal is for students to understand and demonstrate the rational root theorem, which allows finding roots of a polynomial equation by testing possible rational roots based on the factors of the leading coefficient and constant term.

A. Reviewing or Activity 1: Finding Roots of Polynomial Equation

presenting the new (Think-Pair-Share)
lesson
Instruction: Let the students answer the following activity.

 Given: x3- 2x2-5x + 6 = 0, find the roots of the equation.

Expected answer: -2, 1, and 3

 Guide question: Is it easy to find the roots of a polynomial

equation which is not in factored form?

Expected answer: not always easy

 We need to find a more systematic approach which is to

limit
the roots that we need to try when solving a polynomial
equation.
B. Establishing a
purpose for the Activity 2: (Group Activity)
lesson
Group the class into 6 groups and let them complete the given
table below and answer the questions that follow.

Polynomial Equation Leading Constant Roots

Coefficient Term
1. x3+6x2+11x-6 = 0 1 1, 2, 3
2. x3-x2-10x-8 = 0 -8 -2, -1, 4

5. 3x4-16x3+21x2+4x-12 = 0 -12 -2/3, 1, 2, 3

Expected answer: see attachment

1: For each equation, list all possible rational numbers whose

numerators are factors of the constant term and whose
denominators are factors of the leading coefficient.

2. Look at the roots of each polynomial equation in the

table. Are these root in the list of rational numbers in
question 1?

Expected answer: yes

3. Refer to equations 1-3 in the table. The leading coefficient

of each polynomial equation is 1. What do you observe
about
the roots of each equation to the corresponding constant
term?

Expected answer: the roots are factors of the

corresponding constant terms.

This observation is stated in the Rational Root Theorem.

C. Presenting Activity 3:
examples of the
new lesson Group Activity: Study the guided solution to the given
polynomial equations. Fill in the blanks with appropriate words,
numbers, or symbols to complete the solution.

Solve x3 + x2 - 12x –12 = 0.

Solution:
The equation has at most 3 real roots. The leading
coefficient is 1 , and its factors are 1 and -1 . The constant
term is -12 , and its factors are ± 12, ± 6, ± 4 , ± 3, ± 2 , ± 1

The possible roots of the equation are , ___, ___, ___, ___,
____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____and ____.

(expected answer: ±12, ±6, ±4, ±3, ±2, ¿ ± 1..

To test if 1 is a root of the given equation, use synthetic

division,

1 1 1 -12 -12
1 2 -10
1 2 -10 -30

Since the remainder is _____, therefore 1 is _______ of the

equation.

Test if -1 is a root of the equation.

-1 1 1 -12 -12
-1 0 12
1 0 -12 0

Since the remainder is ______, therefore -1 is ________

of the equation.
Hence, x3 + x2 -12x -12
x+1 = x2 – 12.

We can obtain the other roots of x3 + x2 -12x -12 = 0 by

solving for the roots of x2 – 12 = 0 by using quadratic formula.
Its roots are ________ and _______.

(expected answer: 2√3 and -2√3)

Therefore, the real roots of the polynomial equation

x + x2 - 12x –12 = 0 are ______, _______, and _______.
