● Came from the Greek word “Ethos” meaning Character
● Concerned with understanding right and wrong and how conduct should be
judged as good or bad
● Set of moral principles or values that govern actions and decisions of an
individual group

Why is Ethical behavior necessary?
● Necessary for society to function in an orderly fashion
● Glue that holds a society together
● It promotes trust and confidence of employees, investors, and shareholders as
well as the general public.
Why do people act unethically?
1. The person’s ethical standards are different from those of society as a whole
2. The person chooses to act selfishly / greedily

Principles of Personal Ethics include among others:

● Basic justice and fairness


● Respect for the rights of others
● Concern for the rights of others
● Concern for the well-being or welfare of others
● Benevolence, trustworthiness, and honesty
● Compliance with the law

Professional Ethics include among others:
