Group Reflection Piece- Gibbs Reflective Cycle

Description- What happened?

As part of our module PR414 Preparation for Practice, all the students in the module were put into
collaborative groups to work as a multi-disciplinary team. A multidisciplinary team (MDT) is a
collection of healthcare professionals from various organizations and professions (such as general
practitioners, social workers, and nurses) that collaborate to make choices about the care of particular
patients and service users (Taberna et al 2020). The collaborative groups consisted of
physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and dieticians. Our groups
met weekly to discuss the content covered in each week’s lecture, to debate the problem scenarios that
were assigned to us and to express our group's thoughts and ideas to the forum regarding the main
problem scenario of the week.

Feelings/thoughts
At first I was a bit nervous to meet my group members as I had never worked as a multi-disciplinary
team before and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The first day we met my worries quickly disappeared as
they were all very friendly. In the beginning we explained our backgrounds/past experiences and why
we joined our course. On our first meeting we assigned roles of the group which I believe was
important so everyone could be included in our discussions. I was assigned facilitator of the group
which at first I was apprehensive about as I had to be confident enough to be able to lead the group.
As weeks went on, I believe we grew more comfortable with each other and started to bounce ideas
off one another. I also found it fascinating to get their views and opinions on the material we
discussed each week. As we all came from different backgrounds we each had something different to
add from our past experiences.

Evaluation- What went well/challenges?

Overall this was a successful, enjoyable experience which excites me for my future placements. I
thought everyone in the group contributed well to our group and I believe assigning roles to the group
helped us with this as everyone had a job to do. As facilitator of the group, sometimes I had to keep
the conversation flowing when we faced a barrier on a problem scenario as we had a time constriction
each week, I was a bit nervous by doing this at first but all my group cooperated well. Everyone in our
group worked well together and we really formed a friendship in the end.

Conclusion- What could I have done?

From this experience, I have learnt so much about working in a group and I have realised I thoroughly
enjoy being part of MDT. Being facilitator of the group really boosted my confidence and thought me
I am well able to be a team leader. Overall I believe everyone pulled their weight and we all learnt
from each other which I believe is very important. From this experience, I feel this will be benefit me
for my future placements as I have gained a new experience, new knowledge and a new skillset which
will help me work as a MDT on placement.
