Drowning in Tears

We can’t deny how hard for the students to learn online and to manage their stress and
time. As learning takes place in a virtual environment, students’ learning challenges can be
exacerbated. When I entered college, having an online class is new to me as I’m used to
modular learning during SHS. I was struggling to the point that I was crying silently at three (3)
in the morning just because of stress, self-doubt, and losing hope to survive. My sleeping
pattern changed badly as well as my time for eating. Pillows are tired to wipe those
unstoppable tears and blankets are enervated to cover the lost radiance.

One day, my parents scolded me for not getting out of my room and always facing my
phone and laptop. I felt that my temper is rising as they don’t know all of my struggles just to
make them proud of me. I didn’t listen to them and continued to finish all of my tasks. The next
day, they forced me again to get out of my room but they don’t know how I badly want to, yet I
can’t. I must prioritize all the activities and assignments as the deadline is fast approaching. My
parents are acting like it is very easy since it’s online and I’m just overreacting just to escape in
the household chores. I hated them for not understanding why I am busy and not having care
to my mental health.

I learned to fight alone since they are not trying to understand my situation. Drowning
into tears while finding the life jacket of appreciation. Screaming for help while enshrouded by
excessive frustration. How I wish I could go back to the time when there is no pandemic
because even I am stressed in school, I have friends who always put a smile on my face. This
inexorable nightmare is making me feel helpless but just like what they said, “the greater your
storm, the brighter your rainbow”.

The day before our finals they accidentally saw me crying in my room. Stress, time, and
pressure are killing me slowly at that time, and unlike before I can’t even act in front of them
that nothing happened. “Why are you crying my love?”, my mom asked me while I’m still
sobbing. “What’s the problem? Please tell papa”, my dad added. I can feel the concern in their
voice and that’s the time when everything turned upside down. After telling them of everything
I had been through, they started to make me feel more loved, check me every day if I am okay,
and remind me that if I have a problem they are always there for me. This time, I’m drowning in
tears not because of sadness but because of the happiness that I felt which I’ve been looking
for.
LEVELS OF CONFLICT:

Interpersonal Conflict

- There’s a conflict between the author and her parents due to misunderstanding, different
perception in the situation and attitudes that led into frustration and disappointment.

Intrapersonal Conflict

- The author experienced conflict because of the negativity within herself. She is fighting with her
own stress, self-doubt, and despair that affected her physical and mental state negatively even
she doesn’t want it herself.

PRINCIPLES OF CONFLICT

Conflict is Natural

As we noticed, the conflict in the story naturally occurs as the interaction between the parents and their
daughter is a normal part of any human interaction. The conflict came out naturally having that the
characters have a different perception regarding the situation.

Conflict is an On-going Process

Conflict continues as we continue building a strong relationship with each other. Just like in the story,
without a conflict between the characters they won’t have any realizations and understanding about each
other’s views and situation. As they continue to move forward, there is always a conflict that will help
them in developing of their relationship as a family.

Conflict is a Dynamic Process

After knowing the real situation of their daughter, they started to change and adjust their attitude and
understanding as they know that it is the right thing to do that will help their daughter to overcome her
struggles in school. They came up with a lot of realizations that changed their perception after the
conflict.

Conflict is positive

They all began to re-examine the situation and their responses where it would be beneficial in
restoring/improving their relationship. Despite of their misunderstandings, they managed to see it in a
positive way to reconnect with each other.
Conflict is embedded in all relationships

There’s a conflict because of the relationship between the characters in the story. It is always connected and
will arise in our relationship with others but what matters is how we interpret the conflict and how to respond
just like what the parents did.

STAGES OF CONFLICT IN THE STORY

LATENT

The author was struggling because of her school works and the sudden change of the learning
environment, yet her parents did not bother to notice and look after her.

PERCIEVED

Her parents objected for not leaving her room because they thought she was just avoiding all the
household chores. She was against it and continued to finish all of her tasks.

FELT

She felt annoyed when her parents scolded and forced her again to get out. She hated the fact that her
parents can’t understand her situation and didn’t even check if she was okay.

MANIFEST

Realizations came when her parents found out about their daughter’s situation. Both of their
perceptions changed when they already talked about each other’s reasons and opinions.

AFTERMATH

Both sides agreed to resolve the conflict and develop a stronger relationship as a family. The conflict
became the way for them to understand and adjust their different perceptions to improve their personal
growth and insights.
