Do
you see the same objects in the sky during the day and night?
Does the sky appear the same?
Daytime objects in the Sky

Daytime is the time of day when there is

daylight. At daytime, there are a number of
natural objects that can be seen in the sky.
The sun is the star
around which our planet.
Earth, revolves. Stars are
huge, bright balls of hot,
explosive gases. They give off
their own light and energy. As
a star, the sun is the main
source of light and energy on
Earth. Without the sun, there
would be no life on our planet.
Beneficial Effects of the Sun
1. It helps your body synthesize vitamin D. This vitamin
helps the body to absorb calcium so that the bones
will become healthy and strong.

2. The sun is a natural sanitizer. The heat of the sun can

kill germs that are present on things.

3. The sun is an important factor in the water cycle. It is

also a vital element in the weather system.
Harmful Effects of the Sun
Too much exposure to the sun’s heat and light can
also be very harmful.
1. It can cause sunburn, and peeling of the skin later
on.
2. Repeated sunburn for long period of time can lead
to skin cancer.
3. People who stay under the heat of the sun,
especially at noontime when the sun’s rays are
very strong, may develop headache or migraine.
4. It can cause dehydration, or loss of body water.
5. In serious cases, too much heat from the sun can
cause heat stroke and can be fatal.
Safety Precautions
Here are safety measures that you can do to avoid the
harmful effects of the sun.

1. Do not look directly at the sun. Temporary blindness may

be experienced if you look directly at the sun.

2. Apply sunblock if you will stay under the sun, especially

when you go swimming.

3. Use umbrella, hat, or sunglasses if you will go out during

sunny days.
4. Wear long sleeves when you work under the sun
to avoid overexposure of your skin to the harmful
rays of the sun.

5. Avoid staying under the sun, especially between

12:00 noon- 2:00 p.m. wherein the sun is shining
brightly.

6. Drink plenty of water during sunny days to

prevent dehydration or loss of water, because
during sunny days you tend perspire a lot.
Clouds are
collections of tiny water
droplets or ice crystals in
the air. They are an
important part of the
Earth’s weather.

You can tell how the

weather will be like by the
type of clouds that are
present in the sky.
You may sometimes see a
rainbow in the sky. The rainbow is
formed when sunlight strikes rain
drops and the light is split into
different colors. It appears when it is
raining in one part of the sky and
sunny in another part. A rainbow
always appears opposite the sun.
The colors of the rainbow are
red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
indigo, and violet. You can easily
remember this through the acronym
ROYGBIV.
Nighttime Objects in the Sky

Nighttime is the time of

the day when no light from
the sun can be seen.
However, even when it is
dark, you will still be able to
see some natural objects in
the sky.
The Moon is the Earth’s
only natural satellite. It is the
brightest object that can be
seen in the night sky.
However, it does not have its
own light. Moonlight is actually
sunlight that is reflected by
the moon.
The appearance or phases of the moon
changes within a month. This change in
phase is due to the different shadows that the
sun casts on the moon as it moves around the
Earth.
The moon has two movements. It rotates
on its own axis in 27 ½ days and revolves
revolution around the Earth in 29 ½ days.
These movements of the moon are the
reason why its seems to change its shape from
time to time. It is not really the shape of the
moon that changes but its lighted portion or
the amount of light it reflects from the sun.
1. During New Moon, the
lighted portion of the
moon faces away from
the Earth; that is why it is
not seen on Earth.

2. During the First Quarter,

half of the moon is
lighted after the New
Moon.
3. During Full Moon, the moon
is already in the half of its
revolution around Earth
wherein the lighted portion
faces Earth. In this phase, the
moon is fully visible on Earth.

4. After Full Moon is Last

Quarter. In this phase, the
amount of the lighted portion
of the moon that is reflected
on Earth decreases; that is
why only half of it can be
seen.
