Introduction to CAD Software
What is CAD?CADD?

CAD – Computer-aided Design

CADD – Computer-aided Design and Drafting

- Basically, a computer package for drawings.

Who uses CAD?

• Civil Engineers • Gaming Industry

• Architects • Web Designers
• Automobile Industry • Machine Manufacturers
• Aircraft Industry • STUDENTS
How to draw using AutoCAD?

• Need to access a particular function from the Draw

menu
• Separate functions to draw text, dimensions,
patterns, symbols, and other elements in drawing
• Need to be specific about the number of lines, arcs
or any other shapes
• Must specify where each line and arc starts, where it
ends, the center point of the arc, the radius, etc.
Commonly used Command

L - used for making simple lines in the drawing

C - used for making a circle in AutoCAD

PL – can be used to make a polyline in your drawing

REC – this command will make a rectangle in AutoCAD

Commonly used Command
POL – can be used to make a polygon with minimum of 3
sides and a maximum of 1024 sides

ARC – as the name suggests, this command can be used to

make an arc in AutoCAD

ELLIPSE – can be used to make an ellipse with the major and

minor axis
Commonly used Command
CO – used to copy object(s) in AutoCAD

TR – this command is used for trimming geometry

OP – using this command you can open options window

which contains most of the settings of AutoCAD

SC – this command is used to change the scale of an object

Commonly used Command
X – can be used to explode objects like Polyline to simple
lines, an array or a block to simple geometry etc.

F – can be used to add rounded corners of the sharp edges of

the geometry, these rounded corners are also called fillet

CHA – can be used to add slant edges to the sharp corners,

these slant edges are called chamfers
Commonly used Command
LA – can be used to open layer properties, manage palette
which is a tool for creating and managing layers in a drawing

MA – can be used to copy properties (i.e. layer, rotation,

styles, size) from one object to another, known as match
properties

AL – aligns objects with other object in 2D and 3D

Commonly used Command
DI – measures and lists the distance from one point to
another in the command line

DIV – called divide, creates evenly spaced point objects or

blocks along the length or perimeter of an object

O – offset, creates concentric circles, parallel lines and parallel

curves
Commonly used Command

XL – extension line; can make infinite lines starting from

the point of selection

PO – makes a single point geometry in the drawing

PTYPE – use to modify the point created using the

desired point type
Keyboard Shortcut Keys
Ctrl + N – use to open a new drawing tab in AutoCAD

Ctrl + S – shortcut to save a drawing file

Ctrl + Shift + S – shortcut to save the drawing as a new file, in

short, this is the key for “save as”

Ctrl + O – clears scree to show only the drawing area and

hides palettes and tabs
Keyboard Shortcut Keys
Ctrl + 1 - select the object and press Ctrl+1 to open the
properties palette which lists properties of the object

Ctrl + 2 – use to open design center palette which contains

many AutoCAD blocks that can be used directly in the drawing

Ctrl + 9 – use this shortcut to toggle the visibility of the

command line.
Keyboard Shortcut Keys

Ctrl + C – select objects from the drawing area and press

Ctrl+C to copy objects to the clipboard

Ctrl + V – to paste the copied objects of the clipboard in

the drawing keeping the original properties

Ctrl + Shift + V – to paste the copied objects as a block

Keyboard Shortcut Keys

Ctrl + Z – used to undo last action in your drawing

Ctrl + Y – used to redo the last undo action which you

have performed

Ctrl + Tab – use to cycle through all open drawing tab in

AutoCAD
Status Bar Toggle
F7 – will toggle the visibility of background grid which is often
visible in you drawing area

F9 – toggle snap mode, when snap mode is active AutoCAD

cursor will jump to specific points in the drawing area which is
defined in snap mode

DYNMODE – dynamic input allows you to add information

dynamically on the cursor tooltip
Status Bar Toggle
F8 – toggles ortho mode on/off. When its on you can make lines
either horizontally or vertically only

F10 – toggles polar tracking on/off. When active, you can make
lines inclined to any angle which is defined in the polar tracking
increment angle

F11 – toggles object snap tracking on/off. Using this option, you
can track snap points of geometries like center, midpoint,
endpoint, etc.
Status Bar Toggle

F3 – this key activates/deactivates object snap option,

when object snap is active you will be able to snap your
cursor to some exact points in the geometry like end,
center, quadrant, tangent, etc.

LWDISPLAY – toggles the visibility of lineweight in the

drawing
SAMPLE
Activity

1. Draw the sample drawing.

- Deadline on Monday

2. Search & submit set of residential plan with

minimum floor area of 80 sq.m.
- Deadline until September 1, 2021
