COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY OF ADDITION: Align

the digits according to their respective place value.
ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY OF ADDITION: Regroup
the sum needed.
EXAMPLE 1: In the year 2012, 355 300 youth attended the Youth Council
Convention. This year, 272 436 youth attended. How many youths attended
the convention in 2 years?
Understand: Find out how many youths attended the convention in 2
years?
Plan: Add the number of attendees in 2012 and this year.
Solution:
1. Align the digits according to their respective place value.
2. Regroup the sum if needed.

355 300
+ 272 436
627 736
Answer: 627 736 youth attended the convention in 2 years.

EXAMPLE 2: What is the sum of 893 and 5 267?

Understand: Sum is the answer in an addition number sentence.
Plan: To find the sum, we need to add the two numbers.
Solution:
3. Align the digits according to their respective place value.
4. Regroup the sum if needed.
5 267
+ 893
6 160

Answer: The sum is 6 160

EXAMPLE 3: Raquel collected 734 stamps. Her sister Roselle gave her 345
stamps. If her mother gave her another 1 574 stamps, how many stamps does
she now have in all?
Understand: Find the total number of stamps Raquel has.
Plan: Add the number of stamps she has and the number of stamps

ONE-STEP SOLUTION TWO-STEP SOLUTION

In one-step solution, Commulative Property of In two-step solution, Associative Property of
addition can be applied. Addition can be applied.

Since all the given number are addends, we can Associative Property states that changing the
arrange them from greatest to least before group of addends will not affect the sum.
finding the sum.
a. We can add first the total number of
1 574
stamps given to Raquel. Then, add her
734
collected stamps.
+ 345
1 574 2 635 1 919
+ 345 + 734
1 919 2 653
b. We can put together Raquel’s stamp and
Roselle’s stamp then add it to the stamps
given by her mother.

734 1 574
+ 345 + 1 079
1 079 2 653
Answer: Raquel now has 2 653 stamps.

C. Concluding Activities
1. Generalization/Formula of the Concept
 Based on our discussion, what are the processes in adding
numbers?
2. Application
