Question 12 (From Numerical Questions):
A single phase transformer takes a no-load current of 4A at a p.f. of 0.24 lagging. The ratio
of turns in the primary to secondary is 4. Find the current taken by the transformer
primary when the secondary supplies a load current of 240 A at a power factor 0.9 lagging.
(Ans. 62.58A)

Solution
Given: Io = 4A, cos φ0 = 0·24, cos φ2 = 0·9, N1/N2 = 4,

i. Let the primary counter balance current be I1’

N1 I 1 ‘ = N 2 I 2
𝑁2 𝐼2
I1‘ = 𝑁1 = 0.25 X 240 = 60A
cos φ0 = 0·24; φ0 = cos–1 (0·24) = 76.11º
cos φ2 = 0·9; φ2 = cos–1 (0·9) = 25.84º

Angle between vector I0 and I1, Ө = 76.11 – 25.84 = 50.27º

Current drawn by the primary, I1 = 𝐼𝑜 2 + 𝐼 1′ 2 + 2𝐼0𝐼 1′ 𝐶𝑜𝑠 Ө
I1 = 4 2 + 60 2 + 2(4)(60) 𝐶𝑜𝑠 50.27 = 62.63A

Question 13 (From Numerical Questions):
A 5000/500 V, one-phase transformer has primary and secondary resistance of 0.2 ohm
and 0.025 ohm and corresponding reactance of 4 ohm and 0.04 ohm, respectively.
Determine : (i) Equivalent resistance and reactance of primary referred to secondary; (ii)
Total resistance and reactance referred to secondary; (iii) Equivalent resistance and
reactance of secondary referred to primary; (iv) Total resistance and reactance referred to
primary. (Ans. 0·02Ω 0·04, 0·045, 0·08, 2·5, 4, 4·5, 8)

Solution
𝑽𝟐 𝟓𝟎𝟎
Transformation ratio, K = 𝑽𝟏 = 𝟓𝟎𝟎𝟎 = 𝟎. 𝟏.
i. Equivalent resistance of primary referred to secondary, R1’ = K2R1
R1’ = (0.1)2 x 0.2 = 0.002
(b) Equivalent reactance of Primary referred to secondary side, X1’ = K2R1
X1’ = (0.1)2 x 4 = 0.04

ii. Total resistance referred to secondary Res = R2 + R1’ = R2 + K2R1

Req = 0.025 + (0.2 x 0.12 ) = 0.025 + 0.002 = 0.027Ω
(b) Total reactance referred to secondary Xes = X2 + X1’ = X2 + K2X1
Xeq = 0.04 + (4 x 0.12 ) = 0.04 + 0.04 = 0.08 Ω
