What I Need to Knowtives
Good Day!
You are about to begin your journey in creating your own station ID,
OBB/CBB, and intro/extro for your own radio program.
You will find varied activities that will help you in writing your tasks. I hope
that you will diligently and honestly answer the tasks that are given to you.
Try your best and enjoy doing the activities.
This module contains several lessons. To make the most out of them, you need to do
the following:
1. Scan the list of Learning Objectives to get an idea of the knowledge and skills you
are expected to gain and develop as you study the module. These outcomes are based
on the content standards, performance standards, and learning competencies of the K
to 12 Curriculum Special Program in Journalism 9.
2. Take the What I Know. Your score will determine your knowledge of the lessons in
the module.
3. Each Lesson aims to develop one of the learning objectives set for the module. It
starts with an activity that will help you understand the lesson and meet the required
competencies.
4. Take your time in reading this module. Write down points for clarification. You may
discuss these points with your teacher.
5. Perform all activities and answer the assigned tasks. The activities and assessments
are designed to enhance your radio scriptwriting skills. The activities will also give you
an idea on how well you understand the lessons. Review the lessons if necessary, until
you have achieved a satisfactory level of understanding.
6. At the end of the module, take the Post-Assessment to evaluate your overall
understanding about the lessons.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
1. discuss the format and content of radio scripts;
2. evaluate the samples of radio format.
2

What’s In
Good Day! You are about to continue your learning experience in the
radio broadcasting world. During the previous lesson, you have learned about
evaluating sample scripts by focusing on format and content. Learning the rules
and tips in writing scripts is important in evaluating scripts. You should also
remember that part of the previous lesson is the format and content of the script.
In this lesson, you will be are expected to be able to create your own
station ID, OBB/CBB, and intro/extro. Just follow the directions in the activities
that will be given to you, and you will be able to create your own station ID,
OBB/CBB, and intro/extro.
Activity 1: Let’s check if you can remember the previous lesson. Check ( ) the
statement that gives the correct tip in writing a script. Write X in the box if the
statement is wrong.
Let’s see if you got the correct answer. In writing a script, you write out the
numbers as they are pronounced, round off big numbers, use simple sentences,
and use phonetics for words that are difficult to pronounce. Complex sentences
should be avoided because audience might have difficulty understanding the
sentence and the anchor might be catching for his/her breath when reading long
sentences.
What’s New
Read the discussion on the opening billboard, closing billboard, intro, and
extro, time check, and spiels. This will guide you in writing the parts of your script.
Station ID – It identifies the station, and it contains the call sign and station
handle. In addition, it uses the station jingle/song of the station as its background or
it is the legal announcement broadcast at the top of the hour identifying the radio
station by its legal call letters
4
Example:
Come, listen to the latest
The latest news, news, news Name of station
We advocate balanced and fair journalism.
D-Z-V-T, Mountain News 93.8 AM Frequency
Call letters
Example:
D-Z-V-T, The Voice of Truth!
Bringing you the hottest and the latest News!
This was brought to you by The Voice Company
Fair, balanced, trustworthy! D-Z-V-T, 91.3 The Voice News
Intro - This is the short introduction given by the anchor or anchors. It usually
follows the OBB. The anchors introduce their names, and the radio news program
Example: Greetings
Anchor 1. Good evening Philippines! Good morning Cordillera. This is __________.
Anchor 2: And this is _________________. Radio news program
Anchors 1 and 2: You are tuned in to 91.3 D-Z-V-T, The Voice News.
Extro – It is the message you broadcast at the end of an episode, program or
newscast. This is done by the anchor/s or the reporter (scripts.farmradio). This
consolidates the recap of the news report. For a news program, this signifies the part
where the anchors close their newscast by saying their name, radio news program,
other closing lines.
Example:
Anchor 1. That is the news round up for today. Watch again tomorrow for the
latest news updates. This is Lia De Vera.
Anchor 2: And this is Jun Rido.
Anchors 1 and 2: This is 91.3 D-Z-V-T, The Voice News.
Time Check – This is the live announcement of the exact clock time. All
stations are mandated to announce the official time from PAG-ASA.
Example: Anchor: Time check, it’s two minutes past the hour of six. or
Anchor: Time check, it’s 12:56/twelve fifty-six
5
What is It
In writing a script, you always start with the preliminaries like the Opening
Billboard (OBB), station ID, and intro. Likewise, in ending your script, you end with
an extro and a Closing Billboard.
You also need to remember the spiels that you should include in the script to
connect your conversations in the news stories. However, be careful not to make
your spiels very long especially if you are only given a five-minute broadcast. Make
your spiels short. “Theatrics and long spiels can’t consume majority of the airtime.
Putting premium on the content should take precedence. Banter (also known as toss
to the reporter is the part where the anchor asks a question to the reporter) is
allowable provided the questions are substantial and are not limited to yes and no
replies. Although guided by script, on air conversations between the anchor and
presenter should not entirely be staged” (Dave Ventura).
Before the radio station starts the programs aligned for the day, an official
introduction called sign on. A sign on is the time which a radio or TV begins its
broadcast day. In addition, the station closes the day with a sign off. A sign off
signals the end of the activities of the station. It has the same content as the sign on,
but the national anthem is played at the end of the spiel.
