Commonwealth Essay Writing

Topic: Our Commonwealth

By: Ahmad Farooq

The commonwealth is an international association

consisting of the United Kingdom together with the
states that were previously part of the British Empire.
The commonwealth is comprised of 54 countries, for
example: Pakistan, Botswana, Canada, Australia, Guyana
and the UK etc. It was formed after “British” was
dropped from the name and the allegiance to the Crown
was removed.
The commonwealth differs from other international
bodies, as it has no former constitutions or regulations,
and the members are linked together by traditions and
economic self-interest. The commonwealth is one of the
oldest political associations, and its roots go back to the
British Empire. In order to join the commonwealth, being
colonized by the British Empire in the past isn’t necessary
as any country can apply to be a member of the
commonwealth, such as Rwanda and Mozambique,
which were never colonized by the British.
The members of the commonwealth are home to one-
third of the world’s population. And about 3 billion
people live in the commonwealth’s 54 countries. It is also
really big and covers about a quarter of the Earth’s mass.
The giant of the group is Canada, but many other
countries are small, such as Tuvalu. The head (or the
Queen) of the commonwealth is the Queen Elizabeth II
who has been the head for 60 years. She is not only the
Queen of the UK but the Queen of all the 54 countries of
the commonwealth. There is also a commonwealth day
which is celebrated every year on 14th of March. It is
celebrated in all of the commonwealth countries in the
world. There is a service at Westminster Abbey where
the Queen attends. Commonwealth games also exist and
is a sports event held every four years in which all the
countries of the commonwealth compete together in
different types of sports.
Commonwealth countries benefit from each other as
they all are a part of a mutually supportive community of
independent states. This is one of the main reasons why
countries join the commonwealth. The commonwealth
secretariat, which was formed in 1965, supports
commonwealth member countries to achieve peace,
development and democracy. The work of the
commonwealth helps to strengthen governance, build
inclusive institutions and promote justice and human
rights. Their work also helps to grow bigger and better
economies, boost trade and address problems such as
climate change and human rights. The commonwealth
also unites member countries in such a way to help make
their voices heard and to achieve collective action on
major problems nowadays, such as climate change.
In conclusion, we can see that the commonwealth is very
beneficial to its member countries as they help to solve
problems together in a supportive way, where no
member is left out. Not only this, the commonwealth is
also very helpful in finding solutions to major world
problems and helps to build a better and stable economy
for all of its countries, which work together in unity.
