COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Students will learn units 1-3 in the American English File 4 book.
➔ Unit 1a focuses on the topic of questions. Students will review all aspects of questions including
indirect questions, negative questions, and questions that end with a preposition. The
pronunciation focus of this unit is question intonation and how to use it to show interest.
➔ Unit 1b is about understanding and explaining mysterious and unusual events. The grammar
focus is on auxiliary verbs, which reviews both tag questions and the use of auxiliaries for
emphasis and reply in questions. Students will work on intonation and sentence rhythm in
questions with auxiliaries. Students will discuss personality and fill in their vocabulary with
compound adjectives to describe someone’s personality.
➔ Unit 2a addresses the topic of medicine. Students will expand their vocabulary of medical words
to describe symptoms, illnesses, and treatment. They will practice the challenging consonant
sounds: /ʃ/, /ʤ/, /ʧ/, and /k/. Through listening to a doctor/ patient conversation, students will
review and extend their knowledge of the present perfect simple and continuous tenses.
➔ Unit 2b is about the topic of age. Through discussing the advantages of having a friend who is
of a significantly different age, students will expand their knowledge of how to use adjectives.
They will focus on adjectives of nationality and practice adjective order when there are two or
more adjectives used to describe a noun. Students will then discuss age-appropriate dressing
through which they will practice new vocabulary about clothing and fashion.
➔ Unit 3a covers the topic of air travel in which students will learn related vocabulary and discuss
different aspects of air travel. The grammar focus is on the use of narrative tenses including
simple past, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. Students will practice
the pronunciation of some challenging irregular past verb forms as well as sentence rhythm.
➔ Unit 3b focuses on stories and reading. Students will learn about adverbs/ adverbial phrases
and their position in sentences through reading a few short stories. Students will focus on pairs
of adverbs that are commonly confused and practice word stress and emphatic intonation on
certain adverbs. Students will continue to practice speaking through a discussion about reading
habits.

COURSE MATERIALS AND TOOLS:


➔ American English File 4 book and workbook - students will have the physical book as well
as access to the online version of the book. To access the American English File online book,
please visit https://www.oxfordlearnersbookshelf.com/. The username is:
[email protected] and the password is: Ingles1 (make sure it is a capital i). This
course will cover units 1-3.

➔ American English File lab - students will access the online lab to practice the skills they have
learned in class at https://americanenglishfile3e.oxfordonlinepractice.com/ . Students will need
to register with the book code found in the physical book. Then students will need to join the
this course’s lab using the code: C 122 899 0281

➔ Zoom - Zoom is a platform for video and audio conferencing which we use for our virtual
classes. Please register your account prior to starting the course. The class link is found
above as well as in the description of the course’s whatsapp group.

➔ Schoology - Schoology is a learning management system platform where students can find
extra materials such as videos and exercises, quizzes, grades, and all other required materials
and information for the course. Students will go to www.schoology.com with the following
information:

➔ Computer/ tablet/ cell phone with audio, microphone, and camera - students must provide
their own equipment to access the virtual course.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

At the end of each unit, students should be able to answer yes to the following achievement questions:

Unit 1a

● Can I ask and answer challenging job interview questions?
● Can I show interest through using intonation in a question?
Unit 1b
● Can I discuss mysterious or unusual events?
● Can I verbally react to a story about something strange?
● Can I describe someone’s personality?
Unit 2a
● Can I describe illnesses and symptoms?
● Can I talk about medical treatments?
● Can I distinguish the difference between the following consonant sounds: /ʃ/, /ʤ/, /ʧ/, and /k/? Can I
produce these sounds?
● Can I say what medical treatments I have had?
Unit 2b
● Can I identify different clothing items?
● Can I describe someone’s clothes and fashion?
● Can I discuss age-gap friendships?
Unit 3a
● Can I identify different aspects of air travel?
● Can I understand spoken travel announcements?
● Can I tell anecdotes about air travel experiences?
Unit 3b
● Can I identify adverbs and adverbial phrases?
● Can I write a short story including adverbs and adverbial phrases?

Students will also complete a test at the end of each unit, as well as a final oral achievement at the end
of the course.

METHODS:

➔ In each unit we will focus on; grammar, vocabulary, reading, speaking, listening, and writing.

➔ This course uses the English immersion method. All instruction and activities are given in
English and students must communicate between themselves and the teacher in English at all
times.

➔ Students will work collaboratively on different oral and written activities.

➔ This course is dynamic with grammar games and exercises, interactive group activities, and
conversation exercises.

➔ Use of creative and engaging activities, development of critical points of view and a special
attention into communicative effectiveness.

COURSE POLICIES:

➔ Students are responsible for all information disseminated in class and all course requirements,
including deadlines and examinations.

➔ Students are to attend all virtual class meetings, prepared, on time, and should remain in the
class for the duration of the class period.

➔ Please note that only two 2 absences are allowed per term. If you know you will be absent for
reasons beyond your control or sickness, just take into account that they are considered “an
absence” even if they are supported as sick leave. Please make sure to contact the teacher or
check the daily progress report for what has been missed. If a student comes in late more than
three times without any justified reason, this will be considered an absence.

➔ After two (2) consecutive absences, students must attend tutoring sessions to make up missed
lessons or any topic discussed in previous classes. (an absence mark will be eliminated)

➔ Students are expected to keep their webcams on at all times, so please be appropriately
dressed for class. Please silence microphones when not actively speaking, and find a quiet and
distraction free area at home in order to maintain an orderly class, so all students can
understand one another.
➔ If a student encounters a problem with his device or connection, he/she should text the teacher
through whatsapp to let her know about the issue as soon as possible

➔ Students are expected to maintain academic integrity and honesty while completing the
coursework.

➔ Our classes are safe and welcoming environments to foster learning, therefore absolutely no
disrespectful, or unsafe behavior will be tolerated.

GRADES: A final grade of 80% or higher is required to pass to the next level. The final grade is
calculated as follows:

GRADING SCALE
Oral language Students will be evaluated in graded oral language activities. 20%

Formative Tests Students will take a short exam at the end of each unit. There are 3 exams: 25%
Unit 1, Unit 2, and Unit 3.

Self-assessments After each unit, students will complete a short self assessment. 5%

Writing Students will be evaluated in written activities and exercises. 5%

Lab and homework Students are required to complete homework assignments as well as all 20%
activities in the online lab.

Attendance Total of 16 classes. Missing more than 2 classes will result in a failing grade if 15%
a tutoring session was not attended to clear the absence. Please be
punctual. Points will be lost for tardiness.

Final oral achievement Students will be required to complete a final oral achievement to be 10%
determined by the teacher.

Total Students must receive an 80% or higher to continue to the next level. 100%
