Enemies to lovers
Things to avoid:
Any situation involving an abuser and a victim (for example, a psychically/emotionally
anisove bully and a weaker peer).
A rush to romance. The story doesn’t have to be a slow burn per se, but the enemies
have a lot to overcome before the can before lovers so don’t skip ahead to the end.
The reason can be broad (see the list linked below) or specific. As long as it’s any
reason other than “they just despise each other”, you should be good.
Don’t make the reason they hate each other impossible to overcome. If it’s something
completely unforgivable, they won’t be able to love each other despite it.
When designing your characters, make sure they have characteristics in common to
insure that they have some grounds for a relationship.
They need to overcome the thing that makes them hate each other, either realising that
they had the wrong impression of each other or that their differences don’t matter.
12
They start seeing each other has humans instead of just enemies.
They realise they have things in common (childhoods, interests, goals, etc.).
One of them learns something about the other that causes them to change how they
think of them.
On the way to falling in love, your characters will experience other feelings (denial,
lust, etc.). Explore these feelings to help flesh out the characters, their relationship and
make their romance more realistic.
You need a reason for them to stop fighting. Why aren’t they trying to kill each other
anymore? Did they realise that they have bigger things to worry about than each other?
Are they now on the same side? Do they have a common goal? They need a reason to
put down their weapons.
They need to see each other as humans. They need to realise that there’s more to the
other person than just an enemy.
They need a solid, common ground to build their relationship on. This can be common
goals, common interests, common experiences, etc.
Let the road be bumpy. It won’t be a smooth transition from hating each other to loving
each other, so let them take one step forward and two steps back. Let them doubt and
change their mind and fight. This can add great tension to the story.
When one of them decides to act on their feelings, it won’t be an easy transition. It’ll be
awkward and messy. Let your characters figure out their problems as they try to
navigate a relationship instead of pretending that those problems suddenly don’t exist
now that they’re dating.
When they agree to go on a date / try having a relationship, it will most likely be very
awkward. Since they’ve spent so much time trying to kill each other, it’ll be weird to be
romantic.
The relationship will definitely have issues at the beginning. Trust issues have been
built up over a long time, so they’ll have to work to get past it.
13
The relationship will probably be slowly paced at the beginning, but can pick up speed
after they get over their pride, trust each other and become comfortable with their new
dynamic.

#5 - Person A and Person B are attending an important and very formal event with high-
ranking people present. One of them tries to involve A in an intellectual conversation

the monarch.
#4 - Horseman - Person A is the offspring of the Royal Highness but really is a wild child
and is out riding their horse most of the time. Person B works in the stables and has a tight

responsibility of ruling the empire. Luckily they have Person B, their closest advisor, at

from their maid/valet Person B to find out who it is. But is Person A right to trust Person B?
#9 - Weak Link - For the sake of alliances Person A has to tie the knot with Person B. That
they have never talked to each other doesn’t matter. But that they disagree on nearly every
topic is something they only find out when it’s too late. It seems that the alliance isn’t as
unanimous within itself.
#10 - Patience - After long years of war and loss Person A returns to their manor and finds
that time has changed nearly everything. But one thing, however, is unaffected. Person A is
more than surprised to find their loyal companion Person B waiting patiently for them at the

things about them, they just know everything (“and who would really love me like that

1. A and B were very close but B was never open or affectionate to A. After they died, A
goes through B’s stuff and finds a box of trinkets. The box is full of pictures of A and
B, momentoes that A gave B, and other things from their relationship.

chattering happily about something B did earlier, unsure why everyone else looks so
upset.

would bring B coffee in the morning and leave it on their bedside table, B would make

that B always showers at 6:30, and so on. After B dies, A can’t help but unconsciously
keep doing the rituals.
4. After B dies, A has to tell B’s much younger sibling. Unsure how to gently break the

doesn’t really exist.

2. When booking a cruise, A and B accidentally book a couples cruise. They notice
immediately but don’t say anything because they kind of like being mistaken for a
couple.
3. A asked B who they like and instead of telling the truth and saying A, B makes up a
person. This lie stretches out for months to the point where B is dating this imaginary
person.
4. A and B stay up late talking and while drunk on sleep deprivation, A darts describing
their dream person; from appearance to likes and dislikes to hobbies. Whether they’re
aware of it or not, B starts becoming like A’s dream person. They start doing new
things and change how they look. Whether A catches on or not is up to you.
5. Every year for A’s birthday, B goes above and beyond in terms of gifts, planning a
birthday party and just generally maki sure A has the best day ever. This year, A
decides to return the favour by planning a whole day for A and B. It doesn’t go exactly
as A planned but they include lots of things that they know B likes and tries hard to
make the day amazing. B doesn’t care that it doesn’t go perfectly, they just revel in how
much they love A.
6. A and B are best friends who decide to move in together. It takes them a couple of
weeks to move all of their stuff into their new place, leading to them making forts out of
the moving boxes, sitting very close together on their small couch since they haven’t
moved in the big couch yet and possibly them sharing a bed since the other one isn’t
here yet.
7. A and B are strangers who move in together to split rent. They get along okay but
wouldn’t consider each other friends. One day, A gets extremely sick to the point where
they’re bedridden and B has to look after them. For the next week, they grow close as B
cooks for A, helps them wash and dress and comforts them when they feel especially
bad. Cue them opening up to each other in intimate and emotional moments, becoming
friends and slowly developing feelings for each other.
8. A is really obvious about their feelings for B and clearly flirts with them and drops
hints. B just doesn’t notice and clearly pines for A, thinking their feelings are one sided.

Tips
“Any advice on how to write friends to lovers without it feeling forced?” If you want to
transition from best friends to lovers, the first thing you have to establish is what has kept them
from being lovers until this point.
Because that’s why a lot of people don’t find friends to lovers believable because they sit there a
wonder, “You two have been interacting for years, you’re both attractive, and you both seem to
have crushes on each other and you have not acted upon this at all. Why not?”
The second thing you need to do for a best friends to lovers relationship, you need to figure out
what the trigger is that’s gonna make them start seeing each other that way or to start acting
upon the feelings they have because, once again, they have been friends for a long time so what
is happening right now that is making this the moment where they chose to come closer and act
upon their feelings”
How to foreshadow a plot twist without giving it away. Here’s one way I like to do it: get the
reader to believe a lie and then, when you start dropping hints, use the hints to reinforce the lie.
Here’s an example. Let’s say your hero is a young wizard. As they explore an ancient crypt,
they find a mysterious spell on the wall and out of naivety, they cast it, summoning a shadowy
creature that wrecks havoc across the countryside.
What is the creature? An older, wiser wizard says it’s a demon from another realm- and that is
the lie you tell your reader. It is not a demon but your reader is new to this world and has no
reason to doubt this explanation.
After they believe the lie, you can start hunting at the truth. Maybe the creature only attacks
people the hero knows, maybe it knows the hero’s darkest emotions, and maybe its eyes are
hazel, just like the hero’s.
But as you drop this hints, don’t let them raise questions. Instead, use the hints to reinforce the
lie, such as by establishing that demons have a strange intimate connection with their
summoner. That way (hopefully), your reader will never question anything until you reveal that
instead of summing a demon, the hero actually created the creature out of the darkness of their
own heart.

“I like your costume, you look very cute.” “Are you making fun of me?”
“It’s so cold, you should hold my hand, so it doesn’t freeze.” “I’m not that cold, I

“ wanna practice? “
The Blorp Rule is that instead of getting stuck when you don’t know what to write, you just
write in [blorp] and move on!
For example, if you’re writing a conversation between a character and their mentor but you
don’t know what the mentor’s name is, you would just write [blorp] where the mentor’s name
would be.
This also works for other things too! If you know how a scene begins, and how it ends but you
don’t feel like writing out the middle, you might put in something like [Blorp: Figure out how
character A gets away from the guards], or [Blorp: write in dialogue between these two
characters later] and just keep writing.
The idea is that you don’t have to stop writing just because you don’t know how to write
something out, or if you don’t feel like writing that specific part! You can use the Blorp Rule
and move on to whatever is next instead of getting stuck, and getting frustrated. This will allow
you to work on something else, without forgetting to come back to whatever you blorped, later.
Additionally, if you’re writing on your computer, you can Control F “blorp” to find all the
places you have to fill in, so you won’t be missing anything!
When it comes to writing, going from zero to one means finishing the first draft. Once you’ve
done that, you have something that you can shape. Instead of looking for what to do, you’re
figuring out how to improve what you have.
I love going from zero to one. It’s my favourite part of any project — making something new.
But I’m terrified of it at the same time. Creating something out of nothing is like staring into
infinity, trying not to lose your mind. It feels like going through a maze. You’re deciding where
to go next without having any idea whether you’ll ever find a way out. The uncertainty can be
paralysing.
Imagine the genie in the bottle story. A magic creature comes out of a lamp and grants you three
wishes. Say it, and it will be so. What would you pick? A blue BMW, pack of Oreos and end
world hunger?
Think about it. What if it, really, really happened. You have three wishes. Anything at all.
What’s the right thing to do here? Eradicate poverty? End all wars? A few billion dollars for
55
yourself? Or maybe you should make yourself the supreme leader of the world and then do all
those things? But what if it turns out that you’re not that great at ruling? Perhaps world
domination will become a lot less appealing when you achieve it. Who wants to deal with ruling
the world anyway when you can be, I don’t know, snowboarding?
What do you do when you can do anything? When the stakes are high, it can be impossible to
decide.
When you’re creating something that you care about — like writing a book — the stakes also
seem pretty high. You care about the story. Every choice that you make can either make it better
or ruin it entirely. The further into your first draft you are, the harder it is to keep going.
The problem is that it’s largely an illusion. Your brain thinks that you have something to lose,
but you don’t.
The unfinished story is like the three wishes from the genie. Unless you make them, they’re
completely worthless.
If you procrastinate and never finish the first draft, it will be worthless too. Instead of making
mistakes, you don’t do anything at all. In both cases, you end up with nothing.
The trick is to convince yourself that what you’re creating doesn’t matter. Lower the stakes so
that you can keep working on it without being paralysed. Sure, you may make mistakes and
have to discard everything, but at least you stand a chance of creating something good. More
often than not, it will work out.
Going from zero to one is almost always the most valuable phase of a project. Thousands of
people may work together to build a business, but in the end, everyone looks up to the founder.
Dozens of people collaborate on various aspects of the production, publishing and distribution
process of a traditionally published book. But only the author gets to be named on the cover —
the person who took the project from zero to one.
Sometimes, you could argue that the editor did more of the heavy lifting than the author. Or
perhaps a big part of the success can be ascribed to the cover designer who did such a brilliant
job that the book stands out on any shelf. Neither of them gets the credit or fair share of the
profits in case the book goes on to sell 10 million copies.
If you want to do great things, get good at going from zero to one.
