Today’s M4.0 Factory Maturity Levels
Q: How would you asses the Manufacturing M4.0 maturity level of your
company’s factories or plants? Predominately mid-range
#1
Panel Discussion
• Getting an organization properly aligned for DT is certainly not for
the faint-hearted. It requires a lot of orchestration across functional
areas, top leadership buy-in and on-going commitment, and
significant change management and even cultural change. And we
know that DT often starts tactically, from the bottom up as a specific
pain point in an operation is addressed.

Panel Discussion
• What are some good models to use to organize around the
digital opportunity, while still running the business day to day?
– For example, should a special DT group be formed?
– Depending on the size of the company, does a point
person such as a Chief Digital Officer need to be
appointed?
#3
Panel Discussion
• We often talk about how Manufacturing 4.0 compels cultural change, and
we saw the MLC research result showing that 71% believe cultural change
is necessary to successfully embrace the digital era.
– But from a leadership perspective, what does this change look like and
how should it be accomplished?
– For example, how does the culture get redefined?
• Does change happen through a series of small but important
actions over a period of time?
• Does the CEO have to drive change and make it clear that it is
mandatory?
#4
Panel Discussion
• To take a specific aspect of both cultural change and
organizational integration, we’ve seen the MLC research
finding on IT/OT integration, which shows that only about 16%
are fully integrated and collaborative.
– How best to achieve this integration and what are some of
the most prevalent challenges in doing so?
#5
Panel Discussion
• Payback from M4.0 projects in obviously an important metric, and
will, if present, make it easier to justify additional projects. But we all
know that a 100% success rate is impossible.
– How much tolerance vis a vis success/failure rates should there
be on projects?
– And are traditional ROI models suitable for digital projects or do
we need a different model of measurement?
#6
Panel Discussion
• It seems that there are waves of new and improved technologies
hitting manufacturing with greater frequency than ever before.
AR/VR, AI and machine learning, 3D printing, quantum computing –
the list goes on.
– When thinking about their M4.0 transformations, should
manufacturers be experimenting with as many of these
technologies as possible to understand both their individual
impacts as well as their impact in aggregate or should
companies adopt a strategy of picking shots to see how specific
technologies are best applied to their business? .
