VII. Summary and Conclusion
Dr. Rizal decided to go abroad not only to study and take Medicine course but
also to observe keenly the life and culture, languages and customs, industries and
commerce, and government and laws of the European nations in order to prepare
himself in the mighty task of liberating his oppressed people from Spanish
tyranny. In his first travel abroad, he was abale to finish his Medicine course and
was able to specialized in Ophthalmology under the supervision of Dr. de
Weckert and Dr. Becker, a French and a German Ophthalmologists. He chose this
area of specialization because he wanted to cure his mother’s eye. Also in his first
travel abroad, he was able to write his first novel, Noli Me Tangere. It was
published in Berlin through the help of his friend Maximo viola. He lend him
some money for him to publish his first novel because that time, he was
experiencing a financial crisis because no amount of money from the Philippines
is coming. When the novel came out the press, he sent some of the copies to his
friend abroad and in the Philippines. Also, he decided to come home after the
publishment of Noli. He wrote a letter to his family informing them that he was
coming home but his family and friends warned him not to come home because
the Spaniards in the Philippines were triggered because of his novel. But, nobody
has the convincing power to stop him form coming home. He decided to come
home for the following reasons, (1) to operate on his mother’s eyes, (2) to serve
his people who had long been oppressed by Spanish tyrants, (3) to find out for
himself how Noli and his other writings were affecting Filipinos and Spaniards in
the Philippines and, (4) to inquire why Leonor Rivera remained silent. In 1887,
five years after he left the Philippines, he was able to come home. In Calamba,
Rizal established a medical clinic. His first patient was his mother, who was
almost blind. He also opened a gymnasium for young folks, where he introduced
European sports. During his time in Calamba that time, Storm over Noli started.
He was requested by the Governor General to report in Malacanang Palace
because the Friars learned that he was already in the Philippines and they wanted
Rizal to be deported. A lot of attackers of his novel came out, most of them were
Spaniards but there were also defenders, some were his friends and some are
people he don’t even know. During the storm over Noli, Rizal was compelled to
leave Calamba for two reasons: (1) his presence in Calamba was jeopardizing the
safety and happiness of his family and friends, (2) he could fight better his
enemies and serve his country’s cause with greater efficacy by writing in foreign
countries
