Phy351 - Tutorial 4

This document contains summaries of tutorials on phase diagrams from 2015-2021. The tutorials discuss key concepts related to phase diagrams such as binary eutectic systems, solubility limits, and defining lines on phase diagrams like solidus and liquidus lines. They provide examples of analyzing phase diagrams to determine phases present, phase compositions, and amounts at different temperatures for alloys of various compositions. The tutorials also contain sample phase diagrams for systems like Pb-Sn, Cu-Ag, and Cu-Ni to illustrate how to apply concepts to real systems.

TUTORIAL PHY351 – MATERIALS SCIENCE

TUTORIAL 4: PHASE DIAGRAM

JULY 2021
a) For a binary system of known composition and temperature that is at equilibrium, at least three
kinds of information are available namely the phases that are present, the compositions of
these phases and the fraction of the phases.
i) Define binary eutectic system.
ii) State two (2) steps to compute the equilibrium concentrations of the two phases.

b) Figure 1 shows a binary phase diagram of elements A and B. Determine the phases present,
composition, and amount of each phase at 215 ⁰C.
