Nola Pender

Nola Pender developed the Health Promotion Model in 1982 to help nurses understand factors influencing patients' health behaviors. The model identifies individual characteristics, experiences, cognition, and affect as influencing commitment to and engagement in health-promoting behavior. Pender viewed nurses as collaborating with patients and communities to generate optimal conditions for health, well-being, and quality of life through disease prevention and health promotion.
