CHE4613LAB7

This document provides instructions for a lab experiment on modeling and simulating rigorous distillation processes using Aspen Plus. Students will design and rate a distillation column to purify a mixture of benzene and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. The objectives are to understand rigorous distillation modeling, perform column design studies, and improve column performance. Students will specify the column parameters, run simulations, extract stream data, and plot profiles to analyze stage-by-stage behavior and discuss the results.

Objective

1. to study the rigorous distillation modeling and simulation in Aspen plus,

that important in column design and rating
2. perform column designing and perform rating studies of a column
3. use detailed rigorous distillation modeling and simulation to understand
and improve column performance

Lab Resources

Aspen Plusr software

Procedure/Method

Separation by distillation is one of the most common chemical engineering unit

operations, based on vapor-liquid equilibrium. In distillation, a feed mixture of
two or more components is separated into two or more products, including, and
often limited to, an overhead distillate and a bottom product, whose composi-
tions differ from that of the feed. Aspen Distillation Synthesis which enables
rapid conceptual design of distillation schemes for the separation of chemical
mixtures, with non-ideal, vapor-liquid equilibrium. Use of Aspen Distillation
Synthesis The rigorous design of distillation columns is a very complicated and
time-intensive process because of the complexity of the calculation and the
many degrees of freedom in the design. These include the reflux ratio, operating
temperature and pressure, choice of partial or total condenser, use of a single or
multiple feeds and their location, possibility of withdrawing some liquid streams
(called side streams) from stages within the column.
In this Lab experiment rigorous design and rating of distillation columns will
be used to learn how interactively design and rate distillation columns in Aspen
Plus.
1. Distillation column specification
2. operating specification of the distillation column
3. specify the feed location, under Streams
4. specify condenser pressure, under Pressure (or pressure drop if necessary)
5. Once there are no remaining red flags (unspecified parameters), run the
calculation, observe and interpret the results.

Out Comes

Students will get hands on experience in modeling and simulation of rigorous

distillation separation processes in Aspen Plusr and develop the skills and
techniques required for creating and running process simulations.

Problem Statement

A saturated liquid of an equimolar mixture of benzene and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane

100 + a+3b+c+4e

hr at 1 atm is to be purified by distillation to produce
b
a distillate containing 0.89 + 156 = mole fraction of benzene and a bot-
b
toms product that contains 0.02 + 134 = mole fraction of benzene. The
distillation column is to operate at 1 atm pressure and the feed to the column
is a saturated liquid. Use the RADFRAC program and the NRTL model to
design the distillation column.
