What I Need to Know

This module provides you an understanding of the concepts of typhoon. The

Philippines is prone to typhoon due to its geographical location which generally
produce heavy rains, strong winds and flooding of large areas which result to heavy
casualties. Thus, it is important to have an in-depth understanding of such
phenomenon.
In your journey through the discussions and different tasks, you are expected
to attain the following:

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Trace the path of typhoons that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility
(PAR) using a map and tracking data (S8ES-IIf-21)

This module contains lesson on:

Lesson 1 Tracking the Path of Typhoons

Note: All answers to activities and assessments must be written on a separate sheet
of paper.

Lesson
1 Tracking the Path of Typhoons

You have learned in the previous modules that the Philippines is prone to
typhoons because of its location and tropical climate. In the Philippines, typhoons are
called bagyo and an average of 25 typhoons visit the country every year.

In this module, you will learn about tracking the path of typhoons.

What’s In

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services

Administration (PAGASA) raises public storm warning signals and gives local names
to tropical cyclones that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Below is the
list of names of Philippine tropical cyclone. The first tropical cyclone of the year starts
with the name beginning in letter A as in AMBO under column 1 for 2020 and so on.

WBLS-OBE MELC-Aligned Self-Learning Module Science 8 4

In the event that the number of tropical cyclones within the year exceeds 25, an
auxiliary list is used, the first ten of which are listed under each column.

What’s New

PAR is bounded by an imaginary line drawn along the following coordinates:

5°N 115°E, 15°N 115°E, 21°N 120°E, 25°N 120°E, 25°N 135°E and 5°N 135°E. The
western boundary of the PAR is closer to the coastline of the country than the eastern
boundary. The eastern PAR boundary is several hundred kilometers away from the
nearest coastline in the eastern part of the country and completely encloses the East
Philippine Sea. Tropical cyclones inside the PAR warrants the issuance of Severe
Weather Bulletin, the highest level of warning information issued for tropical cyclones.
If a typhoon is located inside the PAR, PAGASA will give local name to it and raise a
public storm warning signal.

What is It

Plotting the Philippine Area of Responsibility

Objective:
After performing the activity, you should be able to plot the PAR coordinates on
the Philippine map.

Materials
pencil Philippine map

Procedures
1. Plot the following points on the Philippine map.

Points Latitude, Longitude

A 5 °N, 115 °E
B 15 °N, 115 ° E
C 21 °N, 120 °E
D 25 °N, 120 °E
E 25 °N, 135 °E
F 5 °N, 135 °E

2. Connect the points. The region within the boundary line is the Philippine Area of
Responsibility. PAGASA monitors all tropical cyclones that enter this area.

WBLS-OBE MELC-Aligned Self-Learning Module Science 8 6

Guide Questions
1. If a typhoon is located at 12°N, 130°E, is it within the PAR? Plot its location on
the map.
2. How about if the typhoon is at 27°N, 126°E, is it inside the PAR? Plot its location
on the map.

3. What’s More

Typhoon Track Chart

Objective
To track the location of typhoon Ulysses as it moves from day to day.
Materials
Map of Philippine Area of Responsibility ruler pen
Procedures
1. Using the data in Table 1, plot the day-to-day location of typhoon Ulysses on the
map.
2. Mark each location with a dot.
3. Connect the dots to track the path of the typhoon from November 9-14, 2020.
(You may cut the map on page 15)

What I Have Learned

Let’s Summarize

1. In the Philippines, tropical cyclone or typhoon is commonly known as bagyo.

to typhoons. It also gives local names to typhoons that enter the Philippine Area

of Responsibility (PAR).

What I Can Do

There is a typhoon and your place is placed under signal no. 1. Your area is
experiencing heavy rains and moderate winds. The National Disaster Risk Reduction
Management Council (NDRRMC) prompted a text with orange rainfall in your area and
a warning for a possible landslide. Are you going to school or not? Explain your
answer.
