Eight parts of speech in English Language

Parts of speech: a category to which a word is assigned in accordance with its syntactic functions. In English the main parts of
speech are noun, pronoun, adjective, determiner, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.

The 8 parts of speech is a way to describe the function of words in the English language.

what are nouns?

Nouns are words that name the following

Things Table, Chair


People Dour, Anele
Animals Dog, Cat
Places Gaborone

Examples of sentence that have nouns:

Dour is driving a car. In this sentence we see two nouns which are Dour and car

what are pronouns?

Pronouns are words that take the place of Nouns. Sometimes we do not want to use a noun, instead we
will use a pronoun in that case. Pronouns have both personal object pronouns and possessive pronouns.

Example of personal object pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them

Example of possessive pronouns: mine, yours, his, her, ours and their and etc.

Examples

Dour is in the Kitchen. He is cooking

What are adjectives?

Adjectives are words that describes nouns, pronouns, they give more information about nouns and
pronouns.

Examples of possessive Adjectives: my, your, his, her, its, our, there and etc.

What are interjections?

These are small words without any real grammatical value. This type of word is commonly used in spoken
English. They usually express emotions.

Examples: damn! I missed the train. Here the speaker is using damn! As an interjection to express
disappointment or frustration due the fact that he has missed a train.

What are verbs?

These are words that show an Action or state of an object

These are words that describes or modify verbs, they can also be used to modify or describe other
adverbs

Examples: dour is running quickly. (gives more information about an Action)

What are conjunctions?

These are the words that join words, phrases, or clauses together.

Common examples: and, or, because, so, but, while, for.

What are prepositions?

These are words that connects nouns phrases to another part of the sentence, preposition means “Place
before” that’s because prepositions are usually before the noun phrase. There are three common use of
prepositions:

To describe place Dour is in the Kitchen


The lamp is on the table
To describe time I am going to Landon for a week
Please don’t talk during the lesson
To describe I will send you the letter by email
