Finish Carpentry Projects
Almost any visible wood in a home was put there by a carpenter. Finish carpentry
projects can include basic, functional items such as hardwood flooring or stairs. Most
of the skilled and specific finish carpentry work, however, is aesthetic. Finish
carpenters typically:
• cut and add design details to window and door trim.
• install and dress up baseboards at the floor and crown molding at the ceiling
• install crown molding, wainscoting, and wall paneling
• build in bookshelves and intricate fireplaces.
Trim is a general term for all the finish details that you see in a house, apartment,
or a building. Each piece of trim though has a specialized name and purpose. Base
molding, crown molding, door casing, and window casing are each an example of trim
but they are most often used with their specific name or purpose. For example, adding
bookshelves into a home adds more space for storage but is meant to be seen by the
people living there or anyone visiting. Kitchen cabinets are another example of finish
carpentry. After the kitchen is sheetrocked and the electrical and plumbing are
installed, finish carpenters provide storage for the home or apartment with cabinets
that make your home look more complete.
Who are finish carpenters?
Finish carpenters work with a variety of specific tools for cutting, measuring, and lay out.
Nail guns with small and precise nails, hand planes, and Many of the tools though are used in both
rough and finish carpentry. For example, jigsaws are common with both framers and finish
carpenters. A framer may need a jig saw to cut a hole in sheathing for a pipe, while a finish
carpenter may need that same tool to cut open the back of a cabinet for a pipe. Many of the skills
rough carpenters may need carry over into finish carpentry and vice versa. Miter boxes are
another tool commonly used by both types of carpenters.
