Finish Carpentry Module 1

Finish carpenters perform the final aesthetic work in home construction such as installing trim, molding, doors, windows and other decorative features. Rough carpenters focus on the basic framing of buildings by constructing walls, roofs and floors. While rough carpenters ensure structures are safe and code-compliant, finish carpenters work to make houses visually appealing using specialized tools for measuring, cutting and installation. The document provides examples of finish carpentry work and distinguishes the roles of rough and finish carpenters.

2. Identify the work that finish carpenters perform.

FINISH AND ROUGH CARPENTRY

While carpentry as a whole is the assembly and repair of wooden structures,
there is a strong distinction between rough carpentry and finish carpentry. Rough
carpentry focuses on the basics – the framing part of building. A rough carpenter –
also known as a framer –knows how to construct walls, roofs, and floors that meet
building codes and engineering specs. Rough carpenters know how to properly
inspect equipment and structures thoroughly to make sure they are safe and up to
code. Finish carpentry refers to the final touches that make a house a home. Finish
carpenters work on homes after the structure is fully built, insulated, wired, and
plumbed. Finish carpentry is the last step in the carpentry process. Finish carpenters
perform tasks such as installing crown molding, baseboards, windows, stairs and
other features of a building that requires aesthetic appeal. To become proficient
in finish carpentry, it takes years of practice, learning a wide range of woodworking
tools. Finish carpenters work with many specialized tools for measuring, cutting, and
layout.
Finish carpentry can be composed of three actions: measuring, cutting and
attaching. The list of installations includes doors, trim, moldings, cabinets, stair
bannisters, shelving and everything needed to finish the interior of a home. Finish
carpentry might seem simple but it's highly visible, and you need a certain level of
woodworking skill to produce tight joints and level installations.

ACTIVITY 1:
Have you worked on any rough carpentry in your previous class? Describe the
project in your own words. Write also the steps by steps procedure on how you finished
the project.

Finish Carpentry Projects
Almost any visible wood in a home was put there by a carpenter. Finish carpentry
projects can include basic, functional items such as hardwood flooring or stairs. Most
of the skilled and specific finish carpentry work, however, is aesthetic. Finish
carpenters typically:
• cut and add design details to window and door trim.
• install and dress up baseboards at the floor and crown molding at the ceiling
• install crown molding, wainscoting, and wall paneling
• build in bookshelves and intricate fireplaces.
Trim is a general term for all the finish details that you see in a house, apartment,
or a building. Each piece of trim though has a specialized name and purpose. Base
molding, crown molding, door casing, and window casing are each an example of trim
but they are most often used with their specific name or purpose. For example, adding
bookshelves into a home adds more space for storage but is meant to be seen by the
people living there or anyone visiting. Kitchen cabinets are another example of finish
carpentry. After the kitchen is sheetrocked and the electrical and plumbing are
installed, finish carpenters provide storage for the home or apartment with cabinets
that make your home look more complete.
Who are finish carpenters?
Finish carpenters work with a variety of specific tools for cutting, measuring, and lay out.
Nail guns with small and precise nails, hand planes, and Many of the tools though are used in both
rough and finish carpentry. For example, jigsaws are common with both framers and finish
carpenters. A framer may need a jig saw to cut a hole in sheathing for a pipe, while a finish
carpenter may need that same tool to cut open the back of a cabinet for a pipe. Many of the skills
rough carpenters may need carry over into finish carpentry and vice versa. Miter boxes are
another tool commonly used by both types of carpenters.
