Journalist, historian Halberstam featured at Baker Center


Renowned journalist, author and historian David Halberstam will be the featured speaker at the Baker Centers program, The Press, at 7:30 p.m., April 26, in the University Center. Halberstam is a Pulitzer Prize winner and the author of 14 books including The Best and the Brightest about Vietnam and more recently, Firehouse, the story of his local fire station, which lost 12 men on 9/11. He has also written The Teammates, a moving account of the 60-year friendship among four Red Sox players: Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky. Another of Halberstams books about sports is Summer of 49 about the race for the pennant by the Yankees and Red Sox. The Powers That Be was about the rise of the modern media, and The Reckoning detailed the challenge to our economy caused by Japan. Halberstam is a frequent guest on television programs such as Nightline, Charlie Rose, and Face the Nation. Because ETSPJ is providing financial support to the Baker Center for this event, we will be recognized in their program and other materials. NBCs Don Teague to speak at Golden Press Card awards


NBC news correspondent, Don Teague, will be the keynote speaker at the East Tennessee Society of Professional JournalistsGolden Press Card awards program, 6:30 p.m., May 21, at the University Club. Teague, who joined NBC in 2002, covered the tornadoes in Tennessee and the war in Iraq. He spent several months in Kuwait before the beginning of the war and covered humanitarian efforts in the southern part of Iraq after combat began. Before working at NBC, Teague was the weekend anchor for the CBS affiliate in San Diego, Calif., and received the San Diego Press Club award for outstanding feature. Before working in San Diego, Teague was an anchor and reporter for the FOX affiliate in Cincinnati. Teague contributed to two broadcasts of Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, both of which won Edward R. Murrow awards and a National Headliner awards in 2003. Teague has also received regional Emmy awards, 17 Emmy nominations and several Associated Press broadcasting awards.

Nominating committee set


President Lisa Hood Skinner has appointed the following nominating committee to select candidates to serve as next years officers and board members: Adina Chumley, chair; Larry Aldridge, Daily Times; and Jan Avent, former longtime board member and staffer at the News Sentinel. If you are interested in serving on the board, please get in touch with one of the members of the committee.

As a captain in the Army Reserve and National Guard, Teague has logged more than 1,000 hours of military and civilian helicopter pilot time. He has also worked in Boston, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Tyler, Texas. Teague has a masters degree in international relations from Troy State University and a bachelors degree in broadcast journalism from San Diego State University. He did graduate work at Harvard in government and environmental management. A heavy buffet will be available at the awards program. UT students win MOE awards at conference


UT students picked up several Mark of Excellence awards at the SPJ Region 3 conference in Fort Lauderdale, March 27. The winners were as follows: Christy Banks, second place (tie), editorial writing; Brett Edgerton, first place, sports column writing; Brett Edgerton, second place (tie), sports writing (note: it appears that he tied with himself ); and Laura Headlee, first place, sports photography. The Daily Beacon tied for third place in the daily student newspaper category. The following universities participated in the awards competition: University of Alabama, University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, Florida A&M University, University of Georgia, University of Miami, University of South Alabama, University of South Carolina, Troy State University, Walters State Community College, and the University of Tennessee. Lisa Hood Skinner represented ETSPJ at the Region 3 conference in Fort Lauderdale in March. Topics for sessions included the Patriot Act, the art of interviewing, and the impact of the Internet on journalism and investigative journalism. Local journalists participated in an Ethics Bowl to debate choices for handling various hypothetical ethical dilemmas. The closing session on Sunday featured a session by visiting Armenian journalists at Florida A&M University on free press in the former Soviet Union. A dinner on the beach (windy weather included) and a Polynesian luau with island dancers and fire twirlers gave visiting journalists a taste of South Florida fun. According to Region 3 director, Holly Fisher, the South Florida Chapter, which put on the program, worked hard and it showed. Next years conference will be in Charleston, S.C.
