Dissociative Experiences Scale

The Dissociative Experiences Scale is a 28-item self-report questionnaire that measures the frequency of various dissociative experiences and symptoms. Respondents indicate what percentage of time they experience things like memory gaps, feelings of detachment from their own body or actions, and absorption in daydreams or fantasies. Higher scores suggest greater dissociation and the potential presence of dissociative disorders like Dissociative Identity Disorder, though the test alone cannot diagnose conditions. It is intended as a screening tool to help identify candidates for clinical evaluation of dissociation.

Scoring: The overall DES score is obtained by adding up the 28 item scores and dividing by 28: this
yields an overall score ranging from 0 to 100.
The higher the DES score, the more likely it is that the person has DID (Dissociative Identity
Disorder). However, the DES is not a diagnostic instrument. It is a screening instrument. High scores on the
DES do not prove that a person has a dissociative disorder, they only suggest that clinical assessment for
dissociation is warranted. DID subjects sometimes have low scores, so a low score does not rule out DID. In
fact, given that in most studies the average DES score for a DID patient is in the 40s, and the standard
deviation about 20, roughly about 15% of clinically diagnosed DID patients score below 20 on the DES.
Remember, this is NOT a diagnosis. Only a doctor or qualified mental health professional can make
a diagnosis of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and recommend treatments. And no matter what your
score on this test, if you have concerns about your mental health, we urge you to seek help.
