COMPUTER FUNDAMENTALS

What is a computer?
 An electronic device that manipulates information.
 It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data.
 Used to type documents, send emails, play games, and browse the web.

Components of Computer
Hardware – any part of computer that has physical structure.
 Keyboard
 Monitor
 Printer
 Motherboard
 Mouse
 Web camera
Software- any set of instruction that tells on what to do and how to do it.
 MS WORD
 MS EXCEL
 MS POWERPOINT
 Linux OS
 Chrome
 Candy crush

Different Types of Computer


Desktop Computer- Are designed to be placed on a desk, and they’re typically made up of a
few different parts.
Laptop Computer- Are battery powered computer that are more portable than desktop,
allowing you to use them almost anywhere.
Tablet Computers- Use a touch- sensitive screen for typing and navigation.

Servers- A computer that serves up information to another computer on a network.

Other Types of Computers


Smartphones- Can do a lot of things computer can do, including browsing the internet and
playing games.
Wearables- A general term for a group of devices-including fitness trackers and
smartwatches that are designed to be worn throughout the day.
Game consoles- A specialized type of computer that is used for playing games on your TV.

UNDERSTANDING APPLICATIONS
 What is an application?
 Is a type of software that allows you to perform specific tasks.
 APP
 Is a common term for an application, especially for simple applications that can be
downloaded inexpensively or even for free.

DESKTOP APPLICATION

Word Processors – Allows you to write a letter, design a flyer and create many other
types of documents.
Spreadsheet application – It will help you to sort data, arrange data easily and calculate
numerical data.
Web Browsers - Is used to locate, retrieve and display content on the World Wide Web.
It includes here the web pages, images, video and other files and other information you
need.
Media Player – It is used when you want to listen to MP3’s or watch movies you’ve
downloaded. One of the most popular media player today is the ITunes.
Games- Many action games require a lot of computing power, so they may not work
unless you have a sophisticated computer hardware.

MOBILE APPLICATION

GMAIL –You can use the GMAIL app to easily view and send emails from your mobile
device. It’s available for android and iOS devices.
INSTAGRAM – You can use Instagram to quickly share photos with your friends and
family. It’s available for Android and iOS.
DUOLINGO – With a combination of quizzes games, and other activities, this app can
help you learn new languages. It’s available for Android and iOS.
WAZE – This is a GPS- based geographical navigation application. It works on
smartphone and tablets with GPS support and provides turn- by- turn information and
user- submitted travel times and rout details.
